I think the system is only just hanging together with the multiple assaults by Trump, and though the various parts of the system do (in theory, and up till now, in practice) have different functions and jurisdictions, I think the SC will end up being the last backstop, if Congress doesn't do its job and stop a wannabe king doing what the Constitution was written to prevent. It's crazy that the US has an already-politicised court system, and Trump is still basically trying to gain authority over them.

*If* the SC show that, despite the 6/3 Republican balance (with Alito and Thomas outright anything-goes-if-it's-Trumpist/P2025), they are willing to say "No", then I think Congress would find it very difficult still to twiddle their thumbs.

This is uncharted territory. However complex the system is, it's never had to deal with a thug and the henchmen he's installed who just stick two fingers up to them and ignores their rulings, at any level.

At the last SCOUTS ruling, a Republican voted alongside the other 4 Democratic judges in the Garcia case. I think you are not giving the courts the benefit they deserve.
The whole tariff problem has vexed people on both sides. There is dissent. Cortiz is doing a great job and even Fox news cannot contain the widespread animosity against Trump. Just remember, the full extent of all the cuts to federal agencies plus the downturn in the economy has yet to properly bite.
When the very pro Republican press like the WSJ are totally opposed to Trumps economic policies, you know his back is against the wall.
Inflation is up, egg prices are up, the cost of living is rising and a depression is on the horizon. He can lie all he wants but the reality will prevail.
Come the mid terms, Trump may end up a lame duck president. He is already 'underwater' in his ratings. Republican senators are refusing to meet their voters and the public whereas, Democrats are quite happy to fill the void.
Plenty of Republicans receive welfare and medicare and veteran pensions and have 401K's...

It's a ticking time bomb.

Yebbut Trump. That's the point. He's been put there to destroy the state machinery and enrich the oligarchs. I would like to have the confidence that you do that the mechanisms that are supposed to work, and have largely worked in the past, are going to withstand the atomic bomb that Trump is.

I'd like you and Melber to be right, obviously, just that any optimism I've had in the past has just rolled over and laughed at me. I think that things will have to (and will) get a whole lot worse and get in the face of the people it's going to destroy before the pushback really kicks in. I mean, he's still *only* -10% approval, FFS. I know that's not good, and it's going in the right direction, but there are too many people who have insulated themselves from the news and what's going to hit them when the wholesale dismantling of the state bankrupts and kills people they know. Even then, there will be the MAGAs who think it's still worth it, to own the libs.
