Apart from his politics, he seems okay.

He's been steering a very tricky course - as elsewhere, the far right has got unnervingly solid support, and like all French presidents has had to keep in mind the power of the unions to bring the country to a standstill (for instance in resistance to raising the pensionable age to 64). I think he's quite deftly managed to be equally unliked by the extremes on either side but has kept them both away from the centre of power.

The catholic church were officially rabid supporters of the fascist coup in Spain in 1936, going as far as blessing the guns used by the fascist death squads.
