Several years ago I was cycling in Bolivia down a well establish drugs transport route. I had been forewarned there is a permanent drugs checkpoint along the route and "don't even get your camera out" - it was a built structure bit like a modern farm Dutch Barn. When passing I noted it was deserted. Later I asked why those transporting drugs would use that road when there is a far safer road on the other side of the valley without any check points and "Because we get paid shed loads of money to maintain the 'check point' from the US and their 'war on drugs'".
