It's a volunteer role. So filled by a very limited demographic. Which is a major issue with magistrates courts.

Not that I was really planning on applying but that makes it sound like a low paid job for the independently wealthy, and no certainty of wisdom.
This is not a good system. I bet the majority of the population were under the same illusion as myself.

It requires a minimum of 13 spare days a year. So suitable for part time workers, early retirees etc.

I don't suppose the demographic filter is much worse than the legal profession as a whole, from which the judiciary is drawn.

David Lammy in 2020 tweeted "Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea,”, after Tory justice secretary Robert Buckland had suggested restricting the right to jury trial as a means of reducing a huge backlog of court cases. “You don’t fix the backlog with trials that are widely perceived as unfair.”

I wonder what has changed? It would appear that there is no shortage of lower mid wits who are queuing up to agree with him however, some of whom would have a fit of the vapours if Trump had made such a suggestion (or at least spammed the forum with dozens of X posts and videos in protest) so as ever I simply say, be careful what you wish for.

The left want to control every aspect of your life, what you say, what you do, how much you can earn. If you step out of line they will punish you.

Now they are in power, they will enforce as much as possible, until before all these laws will be reversed by the next sensible government

Not justifying anything, just a gentle reminder that there are people closer to home who you might want to be angry with as well as Donny xx

Are you going to post this every time Donny does something deranged, illegal and/or corrupt? You'll be busy, don't say you weren't warned ...

No, which is why I havent. I'm no fan of Trump but it does strike me as odd that at a time when people are being locked up for social media posts, comedians are being arrested and dragged through the court system for making jokes on X and the government is proposing one of the most significant changes to our legal system in history that we have minimal dissent about those things in NCAP (in fact quite the opposite, some regular posters seem to approve of it all) and yet we have bazillions of posts about Donald Trump over whom we have no power to influence or change. We can however lobby our MPs and we fan change our own government. This is increasingly likely given that it is one of the most useless and mendacious most of us can remember (and in a long list of contenders for the accolade). A fair few regulars in here voted for them however hence the need for the odd critical voice just to remind them how bad they are.

The left never seem so outraged at other countries, China, North Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Southern Sudan.

Just right wing one's, upsets their travel plans- I'll never visit that country whilst he's president

There's plenty of outrage at other countries, people just miss it because they're busy bumming Trump and coming up with witty acronyms for Rachel Reeves which dominates topics of discussion on here.

... and are instead determined by a majority of 3 magistrates who have no formal legal qualifications albeit they get training when appointed....
Whoah! Wait a minute. I simply assumed that they were all ex-lawyers.
Where do I sign up to get this (seemingly) high paid cushy number that requires no formal qualifications? There must be a demand for more.
I volunteered quite a few years back. The difficulty came in that they kept pushing me to specialise to children's cases and I kept "I don't have kids, don't understand kids, can't appreciate the challenges, etc." but they kept pushing and I felt the specialisation wasn't appropriate to me so didn't go ahead.

Apparently the system is currently net losing magistrates so how well pushing more cases their way will work must be questionable.

"people being locked up for social media posts" has had many pages of discussion in these hallowed halls. If you didn't notice it, I am happy to signpost them for you.

And the change to the jury system has it's own active thread (which I note you are already commenting on):

Surely it's OK to comment on things both sides of the Atlantic in parallel? And we're not going to stop discussing Trump's interesting style of world leadership (and it's considerable effects on things like our trade agreements, two major world conflicts, and scottish golf courses) just because some other pressing matters have cropped up in the UK.
