This is the Donald Trump thread.
Who's looking the other way?

Apologies to the thread police. My point is this. Trump is an appalling person on many levels and you won't get an argument from me about that, but the UK is in an absolutely dire state. We are in what appears to be a state of prolonged national decline with a catastrophic economic collapse looming on the near horizon, with a hated government that routinely lies to the electorate and reneges on its manifesto pledges (plus ça change you will say but this lot are on steroids). The consensus on here however seems to be "Yeah but Tories/Reform are worse and look over there at Trump". The worst government in modern history are driving us over a cliff blindfolded and all I see is a collective shrug of the shoulders. So forgive me if I've trampled on the Trump thread with some domestic politics but you appear to be preoccupied with a government across the Atlantic that you can't influence or change whilst your own is removing your rights, destroying what's left of the economy and the fabric of society.

Without trying to make this an audition for the thread police the above is an opinion that is probably worth a thread of its own.

Possibly the most powerful nation in the world, one that exerts a huge impact upon the security and trade of the world and also, unfortunately, upon this country's and Europe's security and finances. It would be nice to ignore the problem that is Trump but we cannot.

Including from the foreign exchange markets and gilts following the budget.

Maybe you've forgotten, but they are quite sensitive organisms when they smell bullshit, as Liz Truss and mortgage payers found out.

Stick around. Gilt yields (The cost of government borrowing). are consistently higher now than at the peak of the Truss Clusterfück. If you think the bond markets are going to keep on indefinitely lending money to Starmer so he can spunk it all on an unaffordable welfare state then I've got a bridge to sell you.

I'm not expecting anyone to ignore what's happening in America but it seems to me like some people are getting their priorities wrong and giving this terrible Labour government an easy ride.

Brian, the pound is significant;y down against the Euro since Starmer and Reeves came to power.
We were also heading to a normalisation of interest rates in late 2022, Truss or no Truss - if anyone thinks 2009 to 2022 were normal times for interest rates they're pretty dumb.
We now have historically normal interest rates
