I’m genuinely expecting him to announce he’s suing Qatar for $1 billion for shooting down ‘his’ planes (to be paid to Donald J Trump rather than the US Government of course). Either that or announce military action against Qatar.

No you can't and he was blasé about them saying that sadly there will be more deaths... 'it's what happens'.
He's split the remaining MAGA base in two: those who elected him on America first and no more foreign conflicts and those still blind to the illusion.
I think that the only way to curtail this conflict quickly is that there are more troops coming back in flag draped wooden boxes and there are sufficient numbers of republicans that say no and push a motion through congress. Those republicans who have so far endorsed this conflict (somehow) must be fidgeting big time over further US casualties, the flagging popularity of the GOP and a conflict which lacks coherent conclusion.
There's little doubt about the incompetence of the execution and the planning with 3 F-15's already being shot down by the ally Kuwait, the casual manner to which Trump has handled the deaths, the lack of consideration for a wider conflict and the legacy that will come back to bite the US. It may herald a new era of entrenchment where Iran will feel compelled to build a nuclear deterrent. After all, the Khamenei is now a martyr and there are 300 million shiites all of them will be intent on exacting revenge. Iran may fall into chaos but the fundamentalists will have renewed cause. They were sleeping dogs relatively speaking.
Other middle eastern nations who were enjoying large numbers of visitors, calm and prosperity may never forgive the US for putting them in an involuntary predicament.

Maybe not in penal or mortal terms, but if the Senators & Representatives realise how much more unpopular Trump is going to get as bodies pile up and the costs rise (as well as fuel prices), they might at last realise that he's going to sink their hopes of being re-elected, and act accordingly.
