Does it though? The war on Vietnam, however misguided - and ultimately unsuccessful - at least had some kind of underlying rationale. The domino theory and the contest between communism and capitalism for the future. This conflict appears to have no rationale whatsoever, no notion of an end game or exit strategy. Nothing visible to the naked eye but a narcissist's notion that the way to join the ranks of Men of Destiny, alongside the likes of Napoleon and Stalin and the German one we don't like to talk about is to kick ass, bigly.
We all know Trump is 'the greatest president since Lincoln' because he told us so, but he has his sights set higher. And there's only one way to Triumph: annihilation of an adversary.
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for body bags to restrain him either. This isn't a war. There's no fighting going on. It's just playground bullying by the biggest kid on the planet. Even magalomaniacs don't like seeing 'our boys' dying by the hundreds, let alone thousands. It's a PR nightmare. Why take the chance when you can wreak total devastation at the click of a mouse. Also, it's kinda fun? Like a great video game but for real? Boom!

Think of this war as a religious war instigated by Netanyahu and backed by the US Christian Right and the rationale appears.

As to rationale, I have to say that from Netanyahu's perspective I'd think it's more realpolitik than religion. I see nothing to suggest that he hates Muslims, per se; it's more about seeing Iran as a longstanding existential threat to the state of Israel. As for the US, I remain to be convinced that Trump has sights set any higher than His Place In History; Rumsfeld, for sure, is a mouth-frothing xenophobe, but whether you could call that a rationale as such...
