Hotel bookings for the football world cup not materialising

Some reasons proposed are the US is not a desirable destination at this point in time, and capitalism eating itself with silly ticket prices. It would be interesting to see what the situation is in world cup locations in Mexico and Canada.

I presume the various locations are interdependent.

Fifa's decision to have dynamic pricing means they deserve to have empty stadiums as far as I am concerned. They won't, but when you look at the seat prices, they deserve to.

Yes, but if you have a passport that makes it difficult to get a visa to the US, or don't fancy enjoying ICE's racial profiling, you may decide to catch one or two matches in Mexico or Canada and then head home.

It would be interesting to see a comparison in hotel bookings for Mexico, US and Canada for the first stage of the competition.

The issue with visas in the US is now also starting to bite scientific conferences that have traditionally been held in the US. Visas have always been a problem, but in the last couple of years they have been more difficult to get. I know of at least two that have decided to move out of the US for the time being.

That's the capitalism eating itself bit, the organisers greed costs everyone. With silly ticket prices the benefits of hosting the world cup do not materialise for local businesses. FIFA get their sponsor and media rights money anyway, but the local economies paying the costs of organising the event don't actually benefit at all.

I pointed this out a month ago.
I was told that I was wrong.

Not by me.

If it turns out to be an abject failure, can Infantino go?

I wonder how many of those hotel owners voted for Trump 'because he's business-friendly'.

If demand is low, are they going to price gouge anyway, like hotels always donwhen there's an event on?

I probably oughtn't to be amused by hotel owners who thought they were going to make a killing by overcharging having to decide whether to lower prices to try to attract custom, or to raise them disproportionately to try to make up for missing bookings. I'll save my amusement for the ones who voted for Trump, on reflection. I also will look forward to the photos of half-empty stadiums, given the greed of FIFA.
