I genuinely can't see how it'll play out. They convinced themselves oh so thoroughly that it was the 'greatest nation on earth' and the the Constitution was akin to the Bible, that nothing could possibly go wrong that they didn't spot all the ways it could go wrong.

Well most people didn't (or they convinced themselves that no-one would exploit all the ways it could go wrong), meanwhile the Republicans worked out exactly how to exploit all the weaknesses.

And here we are, with a President who's actually got more power than George III did, as far as I can tell. And who's probably even more barking mad.

It does. But I still find it extraordinary that there's not one shred of realisation or basic humanity there. True, it's all part of the same phenomenon, but Hegseth's outrageous display is so much worse as he's not suffering from Trump's many psychopathies or illnesses (though his alcoholism is one up on Trump), and this speech was written and delivered at a particularly solemn occasion with 'malice aforethought', not as a spur-of-the-moment rudeness. It's all calculated to offend in the maximum way possible, not just the blathering of a sick old man. Though the sickness seems to be contagious.
