It only matters if those tuning out are in the US.
UK people tuning out (or in) makes not an iota of difference, except, possibly, to their sanity.
Sorry, long post.
It does however.
For example, the proliferation of data centres is partly on the back of minimal legislation from building regs to energy and water supply. It's also because the tech billionaires have had the Trump gift of a tax break.
So, some of the data centres being built in the UK due to almost limitless venture capital, are American owned and the profits go out with the UK. Moreover, these data centres will gather information which has the potential to influence and manipulate policy/consumer habits - externally. They are deeply concerning and pose a long term threat to our democracy.
Imagine an American administration that stipulated energy production and pollution control/consumption of fresh water. It would have put the brakes on. It would have given time to have a deep think about the ramifications and use of these data centres rather than being lead by the nose down a path where the outcome is unknown.
Further, the alt right runs on media produced propaganda and you can clearly see how that is influencing how the far right is spreading their message - the pro Putin Marie Le Pen is leading in the polls, Fagash is benefitting from US donations/methodology. Trump has lifted the lid off the can of worms and it's difficult to put them back in the tin.
Technocrats were drivers of Brexit: remember Epstein to Bannon after the referendum result "Let the chaos begin".
The tentacles of an empowered elite are far reaching and Donald's death or demise won't stop the super rich from pursuing corporate hegemony and control. Trump has been the catalyst, the enabler. A Democratic landslide in November will possibly mean a reset for the tech billionaires but they may come back stronger and more determined. This all affects us laterally. It affects us more due to the vulnerability of not being in the EU. The EU as a Democratic body contains within agencies of accountability, social, environmental and ethical responsibility. These agencies are an impediment to corporate creep now enabled by data gathering and AI, launched into seemingly uncontrollable hyper space coupled with scant legislation by Trump. They are going to be making billions and with the billions comes power: potentially insidious and malignant power.
