In the future I suspect a lot will depend on what comes after Trump or rather what the US's attitude is towards NATO after Trump.
And maybe NATO removes some of the pressure on the EU countries alone) as there is already an organisation covering military cooperation. And my impression is they did mostly coordinate and respond when the US invcokes NATO article 5 and they came to America's assistance (though as part of NATO rather than part of the EU).

They were perhaps less nakedly self-interested before. But they will learn what worked for Trump in terms of more assertive foreign policies - and what didn't work, of course.
There was the Monroe Doctrine, but mostly it was covert operations. Now it's open aggression.You may want to ask various central and south American countries about that.
