Not because of women. More likely because women prisoners report a much higher incidence of poor mental health and suicidal thinking and many are in prison due to lack of secure mental health units. None of which is going to be helped by sticking men in there as well.

Those of them that demand access to women's spaces and services, and demand changes to language, very obviously do affect people.

No, a lot of prison violence is related to mental health issues. More mental health issues = more violence.

Regardless, the idea that women's prisons are already violent so it won't matter if you put some men in there too is a pretty poor argument. It suggests you think imprisoned women don't deserve to be treated fairly or with compassion. Putting men in with women doesn't really matter because they're just a load of crims anyway aren't they?

One of the interesting findings is that women are more likely to report being assaulted than men who tend to suck it up. Men are more likely to be involved in violence and victimisation towards staff than other inmates. A far higher number of female prisoners have experienced sexual or physical assault than men.

Women's prisons may be more violent in terms of number of assaults but the nature and degree of the assaults tends to be different.

But why is the sexual assault higher in a women's prison? It's hugely significant when the staff on inmate sexual reports seem to me markedly similar.

This was how the data was gathered:

Sexual victimization was measured using one general question for each of two types of perpetrator (inmate or staff member): “Have you been sexually assaulted by (an inmate or staff member) within the past 6 months?” Ten additional questions about specific types of sexual victimization were used (e.g., “During the past 6 months, has [another inmate or staff member] ever … touched you, felt you, or grabbed you in a way that you felt was sexually threatening or made you have sex by using force or threatening to harm you or someone close to you?”). Seven of the specific questions involving penetration or sexual acts were included in the category for nonconsensual sexual acts (e.g., “Has [another inmate or staff member] ever … made you have oral sex by using force … ?”). Three questions focused on abusive sexual contacts (e.g., “Has [another inmate or staff member] ever touched you, felt you, or grabbed you in a way that felt sexually threatening?”). Respondents who responded affirmatively to any one of the 11 questions were considered victims of sexual abuse.

The survey was conducted in confidence:

Respondents, sitting at a laptop computer in a private location, heard and read the questions and recorded responses using a computer mouse.

Which removes the element of fear of reprisal or revenge.

"This gender difference in inmate-on-inmate victimization percentages is explained by differences in inappropriate touching, not sexual assault (i.e., rape). Compared to male inmates, female inmates were significantly more likely to report that other inmates touched, felt, or grabbed them in sexually threatening ways".

I read this as suggesting that women more readily recognised unwanted sexual touching as inappropriate and recorded it as such, whereas men perhaps didn't regard it as serious enough to mention. I was surprised that they didn't mention that men might under report sexual abuse out of embarrassment, even in anonymous surveys.
