Great idea. Let's do really complex foreign affairs by opinion polls asking really dumb questions with no context of what chain of events this might lead to.

I mean. FFS. Might as well ask if we should nuke the White House "to voice our displeasure in no uncertain terms".

Reflecting more on this (you posted a couple of days ago). I wonder if some of the public views about what UK should do are based on mistrust of Starmer. His answer to everybody seems "Trust me I'm a politician". He talks of doing things behind the scenes but all too secret for us to know anything, we just have to trust somebody who we no longer trust.

And after all the U-turns, how he so often decided months later that some policy was wrong so it's reversed, can we have any confidence that his "policy" to manage Trump (that's the policy that's too secret to tell us anything) isn't going to be reversed in several months as they actually do the work to check it.

The distrust in the incumbents around the democratic world seems to be widespread, and simply reflects that a lot of people want unicorns and don't like messy compromise or facing up to reality. They want easy answers at no cost to themselves.

It is all selfish individual "Me, me, me" and "I'm alright Jack" until someone bigger comes along and says "I'll have that".
Then it is "Why won't anyone help?".

I have to resist the urge after just about every post about the UK or US to say "see Brexit".

Obviously I've failed this time, but the same dynamic drives MAGA and most of the other populist claptrap around the globe.

It's why Carney's speech was so on the nose. We're not facing up to the messy reality, where immigration is going to be a constant necessity (not least in rich countries where the birthrate has plummeted, but we want to preserve our standards of living into old age), and where petty nationalism prevents strategic partnerships to preserve some stability and shared values across borders. His identification of 'mid level countries' and how they co-operate is going to become part of the discourse in the years ahead, I think.

At this moment, it's not entirely unlikely that the US swallows itself, at least for a while, China becomes the dominant singular national driver of the world economy, and the EU becomes the non-Chinese haven that the US has been, while Russia collapses even further, assuming its Ukrainian adventure more or less kills its economy for a generation.

Yup, pretty much.

I thought he climbed down because everyone else stood up. TACO, typical bully. (My theory was right 😉)
I'm not convinced it's all over yet though.

Agreed. All that's out there so far is "there's a framework", which is absolutely f*ck all, but MAGAlytes will lap up Trump's meandering nonsense as per.

Any bets on what the next Trump-induced crisis will be?

It has to steal 100% of the world's attention, and be wild.

Something to do with healthcare is my guess (and I'm always wrong).

I’ve figured it out. He has backed off because Mark Rutte is going to award him a honorary NATO medal and prize for services to ……….. 🤔

Sorry I’ve run out of ideas.

Mark Rutte was handing out the hors d'oeuvres and said Donnie could help himself to as many pieces as he wished.
