Those who take credit when it falls must take the blame when it rises. We all know the UK inflation rate is largely based on geopolitics, with a fraction of it under domestic control, mostly the BoE rather than the government.

While I fully agree with the rest of your post, the bit in bold is optimistic. To say the least.

I hope the colour isn't representative. 😉

There is an internal democratic opposition, with people like Narges Mohammadi and others. They align with classical left of center intellectual traditions, and the supporters of Pahlavi, hate that opposition as much as they hate the islamic republic.

Thanks, I take your point - perhaps I should have said "credible".

I do think Starmer has done a more than competent job in handling Trump so far. However, have we now reached the point where Starmer and the rest of Europe can finally just tell him to f*** off?

Well Trump is making it easier and easier by a) threatening the sovereign terittory of other NATO members b) insulting those nations by suggesting they didn't pull their weight and stayed away from the actual fighting in Afghanistan c) adding to b) by suggesting they are unreliable as they haven't fallen behind the US in starting a war that not only doesn't have international sanction but also arguably should have received approval from Congress (seems to be a grey area).

I haven't seen reference to a 'grey area' - there wasn't any direct threat to the US, according to US reporting. At least GWB made the effort of cooking up WMD and got Congressional approval.

It's covered here amongst other places. This mentions he'd need Congressional to declare war but has fairly open powers for anything short of that. It looks like whether he did or didn't need approval falls mainly along partisan lines as you'd expect

Aside from none of this matters, insusoect itnis "legal" in the US. This being based probably on the same interview you listened to this morning.

Also, if you consider it credible that Israel was going to act anyway, it could be argued that there was an immediate threat of retaliation towards US assets. Certainly the Iranian response over the last few days would support that argument.
