Can you hear the patter of tiny feet? That's the BBC dancing on the head of a pin, in response to my complaint. But fair play, they did respond.

That Mr Thomas is such a nice chap, looking after his kindly volunteers! Christian too! So nice to have a good news story on the BBC for a change!!

I’ll say one thing about the BBC, they get their money’s worth from any live music event they cover. This weekend it was Radio 2 In The Park and they somehow have managed to create most of the today’s radio coverage seems to have involved “highlights” of the performances and presenters talking incessantly about the experience. It will no doubt carry on like that for the rest of the week as in previous years or when they cover Glastonbury.

Live music is great but doesn’t work brilliantly on radio at the best of times let alone played back as highlights.

I figured that out 40 odd years ago while watching a TV program showing a gig I was at. Underwhelmed is understating it. Anyone thinking watching a performance on TV/listening on radio comes close to being there is deluded. And lessons apparently haven't been learned.

I find the same with a lot of live albums, not quite to the same extend and very much depends on the genre.

But there are degrees of "live" eg Old Grey Whistle Test worked, live studio sessions often work.

I'd guess some modern pop music concerts could work as it can be more about the dance routine than the music (seen some and "where are the instruments?").

Some of the Maiden live albums are fantastic. I was bitterly disappointed by Mastodon's Live at the Aragon Record Store Day exclusive which sounded like it had been recorded through a muddy puddle...

Agreed on the concerts, not really my disco but the choreography at most Kpop concerts is worth a watch on TV. Same with Rammstein and Babymetal.

And John Peel.
Well exactly.

And 6Music fans are constantly clamouring for details of Live Sessions they have missed, and generally really value that aspect of the network.

It's absurd to say "DON'T SHOW THIS AMAZING ART ON TELLY - IT'S MUCH BETTER IN THE FLESH !!!". Yeah ok, but not everyone will get to see it in the flesh 🤦‍♀️

Especially at Glasto prices.

Agree to a degree although some live albums are considered some of the very best that some bands make - e.g. Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads (a personal favourite of mine) and Live at Leeds by The Who.
