Can't help feeling that that ought to put the claim in quotation marks. As it is, it's stated as fact.

Lightly revised, but it's still Reform PR, with no scare quotes or negativity implied. They are trying to ride this one out, but it's a clear breach of journalistic standards, IMHO.

Oops, revised again, though "changes" out to be "cuts".

It’s interesting to watch the editorial changes in real time.
Gone from savings, to planned savings to proposed cuts.

They seem to realise they've been caught out (sorry, 'made an error of judgement') on this one, and are backtracking, bit by bit, seeing how little they can get away with.

Not disputing the poor reporting, but, shouldn’t such cuts to welfare be a vote loser, given the numbers in receipt of benefits?

The same way Trump's policies *ought* to be vote losers amongst the people who keep voting for him.

But all they see is "tax cut" and they think "Hey, let's vote for that - it's gotta be good for me, hasn't it?"

Hmm, yes, similar to what I have said elsewhere.

I wonder if the majority of Clacton voters are significant income tax payers?

They interpret it as cutting the benefits of immigrants.
They believe, probably with some justification, that their benefits will be spared at the expense of others.

Average age of 50.
One of the oldest demographics.
So loads of pensioners. Who aren’t entitled to in work benefits anyway.
