I don't think we can take it as read that they "had to take him out". In cases where police have killed someone then every aspect of the operation should be investigated and questioned. I just don't think it's helpful, prior to that investigation, to act all surprised that someone got shot when it's your own officers waving guns around.

So the police are more dangerous than some possibly deranged, amateur terrorist.

Equally so in this case if you go by cold hard data. Of course their actions may have prevented additional fatalities so it's probably not that simple.

Well the point is not that someone got shot, if you attack and certain group with an knife with the clear intent to harm and or kill and appear to be wearing a bomb vest, a gun is kind of the only resort. You could argue they could have used asked nicely ''minster Terrorist we are very appalled by your behavior, please remove the bomb vest drop your weapons and go stand in the naughty corner..'' but somehow i don't think that would have had the preferred outcome.

And yes the better choice would have been an slightly more angled gun trajectory so any exit or missed bullet would have hit the walls instead of pierce the door and those behind. but it's often not that simple especially when you deal with some kind of terrorist with a bomb vest.
