FWIW, I once was asked on a TGV by the French bloke sitting next to me if I wanted to play a game of checkers with him. After two complete trouncings by him, I came to the conclusion that there are tactics involved in the game. We didn't bother to play a third game.

Though when a piece gets to the back row, it becomes une dame in French. The dame is the more powerful piece because it can move back and forth while the simple piece can only move forwards.
