I still have a SE accent. I'm no less an incommer here than I was in Scotland.

Though friendly, it is quite parochial here. Swings and roundabouts.

Accents are genuinely interesting. I might have been joking a bit, but if you were in regular contact with Sottish accents, I'd be surprised if you don't have a few bits of Scottishness lurking in your SE accent.

Me, I can't say 'cow' in a non-Devonian way (which is not entirely surprising, and somewhat amusing). 🤠

Now this is an interesting thing.

As the moral of the tale of two travellers goes…’Wherever you go, you take your own attitude with you. We don't see the world as it is; we see it as we are.’
And yet I don't don't have that here. How odd, since I'm still me .

The Scots are an odd mix of welcoming yet defensive and aggressive. It's also been traditionally fairly macho.

When I visited as a child there was a lot of amlnti-English graffiti (which I didn't bring with me) and as an adult I found that the sense of national identity manifested itself sometimes, not often, as hostility towards someone with my accent. The indyref period was particularly difficult for overtly English people like me, and particularly in Glasgow. My experience was fairly common.

The Scots are also utterly dreadful drivers. Very aggressive towards red lights, cyclists, anything really. As a cycle commuter in Edinburgh and Glasgow for many years, with previous experience only in bubbles like Oxford, this also coloured my perception.

Nope. The odd turn of phrase maybe, but not accent.

Oh. Are your anti Scottish panties in a bunch today?

I'll take your word.

Though I was amused one time when I asked a pupil if he thought he had an accent, and he said "no". He's the only pupil I've ever had with that sort of clipped military delivery typical of people in the British armed forces. Which wasn't surprising, as his father was a captain or something in the armed forces.

tl;dr - it's really hard to asses one's own accent.

Why is it anti-Scottish to give balanced perceptions based on the majority of my adult life?

Why also is it anti Scottish to criticise a Scottish politician?

This all rather effectively exemifies my point.

Is that Scottish or Cornish dialect?

Not half as twisted at the ones north of the border!:laugh:

I live in North Shields, England.

Near as damnit to Scotland, where I grew up and lived.

More so than some borders dwelling random who couldn't quite hack it and left.

It's not anti Scottish to criticise a Scottish politician.

Go wild with that.

Slagging Sturgeon because of her ex husband's crimes? Different thing entirely.

I am perfect of course and see no problems with the people of any part of the UK, except Barnsley

Now foreigners…don’t get me started.

Mmm, there's no particular affinity between people in the NE and Scotland as far as I can tell. It's about as close to Scotland Birmingham is to London.

Why did you leave, out of interest? I assume you could "hack it", so there must have been another reason.

Income tax maybe?

Agree. But the outrage now is in part because before it all came to light she actively suppressed investigations into SNP finances.

It's fair, given that money was flowing from the SNP into her household, to at least question why she tried to stifle enquiries as recently as 2021.

Not sure what this has to do with my post.
i was answering a specific comment about the police investigation.

i have no interest in the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon other than to comment on the ctiminal law, which is mty specialism.

What she did re SNP internal matters is a wholly different issue
