He must have known that the shït was going to hit the fan.

To be fair to Sturgeon she really might not have known what was going on under her own roof. She also failed to notice for instance that Isla Bryson had a penis.

OK, so it might be cheap journalism... but...

There seem to be two aspects and press reporters mainly focusing on whether or not she should have noticed her husband's spending.

But also as SNP leader she apparently has a (joint) responsibility for SNP finances and whilst I'm no accountant I'd have thought that normal accounting practices would have spotted that degree of embezzlement. eg who (or how many people) would have had to sign-off on the purchase of a motorhome?

For those SNP supporters who are prepared to believe the tearful version of events she relayed to Laura Kuenssburg it's worth remembering that in 2021 three members of the SNP's Finance and Audit Committee resigned over a lack of access to party accounts. Her response at the time was to state that the parties finances had never been stronger and to warn the NEC not to go public with any concerns because it might put off donors (there is a video of this freely available if anyone wants to look for it).

It's all very murky, because the accounts were also getting signed off by a (Scottish obviously) accountancy firm.

But out of all of the SNP top brass in that period, Murrell, Salmond, Sturgeon, Beattie, Swinney, all have left and other than Salmond (who left so long ago as to alhave avoided association with the embezzlement) been reputationally damaged. Except Swinney.

I hope the calls for more transparency do not get ignored, because there was a lot of public money going into the SNP as well.

But anyway, she's resigned, Murrell's been arrested, and the SNP seems to be doing reasonably well without them.

Yes, what with the fortunate timing of Murrell's trial being after the elections.

He couldn't have been dealt with during the election campaign. As the election date was known in advance it was easily avoided but other trials, that of Jeremy Thorpe is the standout, have been postponed until elections are out of the way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there was a preliminary hearing due to take place on 20th February at the High Court in Glasgow. Murrell's legal team made an application to put the date back until 25th May (after the elections) because they needed more time to prepare their case. That he then pleaded guilty anyway might leave some people to question the delay.

And that will be entirely unconnected to why this is the biggest news story of the year, and so much doubling, tripling & quadrupling-down is going on.

It's been suggested that a deal was done by Murrell's lawyers so it didn't happen a month earlier. If so, it doesn't seem unlikely that a guilty plea was the price of such a deal.

We'll have to agree to disagree.
As far as biggest news story of the year is concerned this one doesn't even register on the scale.
