Not read it yet but I'll guess that Reform is the Trojan Horse, but not the Trojans. An empty vessel seems appropriate.

Edit:- Turns out the report highlights obfuscation and deniable responsibility but I'll stand by my initial guess as an add on.

Strictly, the ones inside the horse were the Greeks, we are the Trojans .

Please excuse my forgetfulness. Old age doesn't come alone. 😉

This is a somewhat ironic comment, given your shadow existence on Cake Stop. I didn't know the word 'catamite' before, but if aimed at an identifiable individual, not only is it an ad hominem, I'd suggest that it's potentially libellous.

Maybe there’s a reason he’s familiar with the term. Unfortunately I think I may be too old to qualify. It’s actually reassuring that we are apparently no longer living under a police state and that Shorty now feels he is allowed a voice again after his semi-flounce on Cake Stop. A guess the Labour government is doing something right.

I had to look up the meaning of the word. I don't suppose the user in question will mind, but my estimation of them has dropped to close to the nazi death camp guard wannabe.

My general line is that if I'm feeling inclined to personally insult another forum member, it's better to say nothing and ignore them. Sure, argue with their ideas (if you think it's worth the effort), but personal online insults are bad form. Unless they are good friends, in which case nothing is off limits. Obviously.

I knew what it meant (my mum taught classics, so Latin and Greek have always floated around in my brain). Have to say it's pretty shocking to see it used in a modern context...

It sounds like something de Pfeffel would say to sound refined while being absolutely vile. Having said that, de Pfeffel did use the unrefined version at least once.

Pretty much. When we were covering that era in history my teacher said in no uncertain terms that if he heard of any of us using it to try and be clever we'd get detention for as long as possible.

I think the MAGAndy has left some others who used to repress their views behind a thin veil of respectability to feel more vindicated. As the person it was aimed at (only aware as I wondered what post had got people responding) it’s water of a duck’s back. Being a free speech advocate whilst having gossamer thin skin yourself is the domain of the alt right and conspiracy theorist nut job types

Insults tend to say more about the insulter than the insultee.

Given that there's already plenty of ad hom that passes without comment from those of you suddenly lifting your skirts in horror you'll forgive me if I find the sudden outrage a little selective, particularly given that the recipient has a long history of trolling me. Not that you'd know that.

Just came across this photo of a teenage coalminer in County Durham in the 1960s. The good old days, eh?

View attachment 14085

A lot of it hasn't changed, no teenage coalminers now however.

I would guess that Photograph is staged, since, I believe all mines had pithead baths/showers by then, so, no need to go home looking like a chimney sweep.

What, with expensive safety helmets?

I think they'd prefer this.

From the Scottish Mining Website accident archive.

Not coal mining, but, an interesting view of Health and Safety when building the Tyne Bridge (1928), no doubt similar footage is available for other iconic bridges.

It gets "interesting" about 1min 25sec, high quality protective clothing etc

I think I am right in saying that, amazingly, "only" one fatality.
