The Full Fact Electoral Promise Tracker suggests that the pledge is off track, but Labour have stated that they are working to change planning rules, as it's the planning process which is slowing things down. They anticipate an uptick, but are not clear on when.

That said, it's a target that usually fails. Wilson pledged 500k homes a year and failed (he got close though), in 2014-15 the conservatives promised 200,000 starter homes but none got built. More were built when the Government was building them rather than developers.

Both Boris and Sadiq promised housing targets for building in London and failed. May and Johnson promised 300k homes per year but managed 184k.

Starmer is on track to deliver between 500k and 800k houses at the moment.

You and your pesky facts...

What is better?
Failing to hit an over ambitious target but hitting mid-level, having a low target and achieving it, or having no target?

Fact is they have missed it by a country mile

I had a Reform Party leaflet posted through the door this morning, along with a wooden spatula.

Curious, I googled Reform delivering wooden spatulas, and found that it is a method to deliver leaflets while protecting fingers from letterbox flaps with springs and bristles and dogs teeth on the other side.

Anyway, doggy was very appreciative and chewed the spatula. :giggle:

Most (all) building projects are behind target at various stages. Housing doesn't just spring up overnight...

The current international situation affects national growth, so it's not exactly a surprise we're behind there either.

I'm not fan of Labour btw.

You don't need to apologise for them failing to meet their house building target then.

They haven't failed yet. But there is no point whinging about it as if they are useless, when many previous govts have been equally useless.
We can add them to the list at the next election, or until there is no prospect of hitting the target.

As has been pointed out, it's better to have a target of 1.5m and build 1m than to have a target of 500k and succeed. People don't usually underestimate when setting targets.
