I was being quite general. 30 years since if you want to be picky, but closer to 40 since Bridget Phillipson's mum decided to buy her house for the equivalent of £30k.

Indexed for inflation have we?, still a profit, and, good luck to her, to me, the profit is not an issue. Goodness know what improvements they may have made to improve the house, after all, Bridget's mother was only trying to give her family a better life, a laudable motive surely?

yes, well, in the days when I could drink eight pints of beer, you would have got change out of £1. That would have been a £1 Note of course, not a coin.

Yes, so did I, at a time when I was paid £3-9s-2d per week, or, maybe it was £1-5s-0d per week for my paper round, can't quite remember, must be all of those pints.

Depends what you mean by "low rent", Council Flat in South Tyneside, £109 per week (payable for 48 weeks per year, with 4 weeks "free", that is inclusive or water and sewerage charges, but, excluding Council tax).

According to Google, there are 16,000 Council Houses/Flats in South Tyneside.

You missed out that you have to think ahead if you need a pee, toilets are always at least five minutes walk away from the bar. This may not be a consideration for the younger members of the forum. 😂

I would agree we need more affordable housing. Don’t necessarily see why it needs to be “council”.

If you read some of the newspapers articles associated with Philipson’s mother’s purchased council house, it was hardly a good advert for council housing, ie lack of maintenance etc.
