This might belong in the Starmer thread, but on The Crackdowns... It's obviously enjoyable to see stupid people getting what my grandad used to call their "come-uppers", but there ought to be a distinction between grown men who try to burn hotels full of human beings, and bored teenagers seizing the opportunity to loot a tray of Gregg's sausage rolls. Give the police and courts more powers to crack down and they will be used (as hardly needs demonstrating lately) against climate protestors and people who didn't vote for Jonathan Ashworth.

Ok, not directly involved in the riot (but encouraging it) is this lovely woman called Lucy Connolly.

Turns out she’s a child carer (soon to be unemployed).

Also turns out she’s the wife of a Tory councillor, who claims she’s not a racist as she looks after Somalian and Bangladeshi kids. But she only wants them burned alive in their beds so that’s ok.

Best of all though, she’s now been arrested and remains in custody.

I’ll be surprised if that doesn’t get her jail time and even if it doesn’t, every background check from now on is going to bar her from a lot of jobs.

But she's "a good person" and " this has been a learning opportunity ".

The backward crawl following the tough talking is so predictable and pathetic.

Welcome yourself into the new modern crisis
Big demonstrations being planned in Sheffield tomorrow, at an immigration lawyer and then the city centre. We're a bit worried about our Muslim friend from Eastern Europe who's supposed to be going home, if it kicks off then he might not be able to get to the station to catch his train to the airport. So it's possible that these anti-migrant protests might have the effect of actually preventing an immigrant from leaving the country and going back to where he came from.

Stay safe Sheffield folk. Glossop Road and town centre are the places to avoid / protect (delete as applicable)

I deliberately didn't use this language as I didn't want to prejudge what was going to happen but the memo we've just had at work refers to 'planned racist riots'. There's a list of targets circulating on social media, basically loads of places which support or house refugees. Scary stuff.

Is that being seriously proposed? :-/

Starmer's Army seems to have cracked down with great speed and ferocity using the current laws.

Perhaps its time to change the thread title to "Violent Disorder" as no one has been charged with "Riot" and it is unlikely for an obscure legal point* that anyone will be charged with "Riot".
Whilst what we have seen on the streets, most people would in conversation describe as riots, in the eyes of the law it is "Violent Disorder"

* Where "Riot" is charged, the local police force are liable for comensating property owners for any damage done - Riot Compensation Act 2016 is latest version of this

Yes. That's what to do. Change the thread title, like anybody gives a f*ck? Although you clearly do for whatever reason.

As for the "two tier policing" thing, as far as I can tell, only one person keeps banging on about it.

We know there are problems, but like most things the whole "two tier policing" thing has been latched onto as a meaningless catchphrase which is easier to trot out than anything more nuanced.

perhaps ... except this is a discussion forum, not a court of law.

(and it's not a legal process forum either. BTW, why don't you find a Legal Eagles forum? I'm sure your contributions would be appreciated there :-) )

How to take the forum far too seriously by Matticus

An often heard complaint about the people on boats.
“It’s only young men, where are all the women and old people”

The same can be said about the riots.
Ironically (or possibly not) there are plenty of women and children actively participating based on a cursory viewing of the news coverage.
