They're an irrelevance, no-one would even be mentioning them if it wasn't for Corbyn and even he is a spent force. They're on a par with all those other far-left Parties you see at the bottom of the election results that have 5 votes from the likes of Rick in the Young Ones or Wolfie Smith.

And to think it all started because Starmer was so against him MPs arguing for lifting the 2-child benefit cap. Starmer so anti those seeking ending the 2-child benefit cap he threw them out of Labour ...

I suspect he's looking at their farce of a Party and thinking it is probably the best thing he's done as leader.

I do wonder if they are having a positive effect but on the Greens. I'm wondering if Fruit & Nut publicity has further highlighted to Labour left that there are alternatives and that Labour are now rather right wing and highlighting that there are alternatives worthy of consideration.

The Greens are equally nuts when it comes to policies on things like the economy. Left wing economic policies aren't a vote winner.

Are they though?

In their 2024 manifesto they suggested
  • A wealth tax of 1% annually on assets about £10 million and 2% on assets above £2bn
  • Reform capital gains tax to align the rates paid by taxpayers on income and capital gains
  • Align tax rates on investment income with tax and NI contributions on employment income
  • Removing the NI upper earnings limit
  • A Carbon tax of £120 per tonne
It doesn't seem that nuts to me. A 2019 salary calculator indicates that I'd be better off under the Greens or Lib Dems compared to Reform, Labour or Conservative.

Wouldn't it be necessary to know:

- what their other tax plans are (or are the above to be the only taxes, with Income tax, VAT etc scrapped?)
- are their spending plans vs their tax plans Truss like, or, are they realistic?

before it would be possible to decide who would and would not be "better off"?

The carbon tax was rising to £500 per tonne over 10 years (I have no idea how big an impact that would have on business) and I was never convinced it would come close to raising the money needed for the spending parts of their plan. They do seem to have become a more serious Party in recent years though.

Edit - at least they've defined what they consider 'wealthy' to be.

Although even Greens not daft enough to propose addressing an identified "black hole" by completely ruling out any increases in Income Tax, Employee NI and VAT.

I don't know what the calculator was taking into account. As a spot analysis though, it doesn't seem to be nuts.
