Post in another thread made me think and I was going to raise my thought there but totally off-topic so trying a new thread.

There seem so many issues of great concern in the World that we should care about but we each have different focus on different issues.
So you're saying poeple from the west care more about things happening close to the west ...
For me i think it's a balance of how extreme the issue is with my personal experience of the area. eg I pay far more attention to issues in Burma than most people probably because I spent a fair time there travelling independently (and had some "involvement" with the junta). Any news report and I'll be reading it start to end. Same for Peru & Bolivia.

Whilst there are some horrendous atrocities happening in some African countries they don't take as much of my attention as maybe the events justify and as given by others.

Maybe there are just too many issues these days for us to give them all the attention they warrant (and keep any sanity).

End of thread. 😉

I know what you mean - I spent time in Oz and NZ so any news relating to there, I will usually read, because I have a <retrospective, nostalgic> interest and can relate to the issue a bit.

But I've never been to Africa so any issue or atrocity does not hold any context for me.

I'm also aware that many overseas issues may well become domestic issues in time, either directly or indirectly, but I choose to filter those out as much as I can. There are enough things going on locally to think about, without worrying about other stuff. It's just self-preservation (mentally)

Hasn't it always been the case that the further away something is the less we care about it? Nowadays we are better informed about things that are far away, but we (in general) still don't care.
