I thought the article said she had inadvertently let her insurance lapse? I thought her offer of £5k wasn't unreasonable but vet bills are ridiculously high so maybe the owner incurred much higher costs. £30k is nonsense though.

Must admit I've never understood having a dog and then paying someone else to walk it. It's part of the deal about owning a very sentient animal with emotional needs is that it's a complete package, not just for the cuddles in the evenings.

That sounds like an established commercial enterprise to me.

I got as far as reading the part about spinal surgery for the animal. Given an 2 overnight stay to rehydrate my cat, give some antibiotics and run blood tests adds up to about £1k, I'm not sure £30k is unrealistic.
I had a cat who had to have surgery for a broken leg in 2006. It was £7k back then.

I was investigated over a few hundred, my mate over a few thousand.
I know of an accountant that was investigated over an unspecified amount, he took it to tribunal with a barrister representing him. Turned out they wanted access to his personal accounts, which they weren't entitled due to enquiries were into his business. They tribunal found partly in favour of the revenue and also the accountant. He had to provide bank account statements but could redact all personal expenses. Seen as they were personal accounts it was literally pages of blacked out lines. There was one error, came to missed tax of a few quid

It did say the £30k included compensation not just vet bills, but from what you (edit: First Aspect) say her £5k offer would be way short of the costs incurred if he didn't have pet insurance already (which never pays out in full from what I hear). Also, her closing her company gave him no option to recover costs.
The dog walking thing is big round here. All those people who got lockdown dogs then found they had to go back into work 5 days a weeks I guess.

Walk the dog before going to work then walk it again on return. That’s how we did it.

Normally there is cover for when the business was trading.
I presume she was covered at the time of accident. He could still claim against the insurance
Some companies will continue to have run off cover after closure for legacy issues that may arise.

I think the insurance had lapsed by the time of the accident. I thought the partial point of a limited company was so you couldn't sue individuals only the company but perhaps that doesn't apply in her case. This kind of business does appear to be a bit of a minefield in terms of responsibility. Not sure I'd want to be responsible for someone's much loved pet for any length of time. It was bad enough feeding my friend's cats while she was away. They all had ailments and a variety of meds to be administered.

On one of my ex-pat postings, when working, I was asked to look after a colleagues Budgie, whilst he (and his wife) went "home". The budgie died. No-one asked me to "pet sit" after that 😂

Years ago our friends said could I feed the mice(children's) they kept in an outside cage(winter)- sure I said, only to find all of them frozen to death on day 1.

That was my nightmare tbh, scouring the house for Snowball the arthritic ball of fluff, desperately in a panic not knowing if he'd expired overnight or just got stuck somewhere. Pets are hugely rewarding but such a responsibility.

Reminds me of a story I may have shared before. I grew up thinking that my Dad was a useless so and so.
I have now concluded that he is a genius. Mess everything up and nobody asks you to do anything.

If I ever walked someone else's dog, I'd never let it off the lead, for any reason, knowing how much they can mean to their owners.
If something startled it, and it ran off, going back and telling the owner would be like saying to a parent whose child you'd been babysitting that you'd lost the child and didn't know where it was, and worrying that it might have been run over in the dark.
