Why is Putin poking?
Is it the last gasp of a crumbling nation? Does it make him look powerful when the reality is that he's not?

He's stuck between a rock and a hard place: he can't withdraw without, erm, admitting defeat (and probably falling out of a high building), and he hasn't got the means to defeat a stubborn & resilient Ukraine, who, despite the nightly drone attacks, seem to be ready to carry on fighting back.

Still think that a few well-aimed big booms (Kerch Bridge, etc) could tip things into a fairly rapid Russian withdrawal. The Russian incursions into EU airspace has strengthened EU resolve.

I don't think it's 'strengthened'. We don't hear that much about what's going on in the backrooms. We know of the Baltic states gearing up and we know the UK sent troops over for military exercises.
I think that the moment Russia invaded Ukraine, western countries have paid heed to it and the reaction to these incidents is the manifestation of that preparation.
Combine all of the European countries that belong to NATO and are actively thinking about Russia aggression and you have a pretty powerful body - air defence systems, fighter jets, ordnance, intelligence...

(Claiming no expertise) I wonder if Putin might be trying to create a greater "enemy". Forcing NATO to talk tough towards Russia might allow Putin to start highlighting NATO's "aggressive stance towards Russia", etc., etc.

He can spout that rhetoric ad nauseum but who will listen?

If a Russian aircraft were to be downed, wouldn’t that provide wonderful copy, in a country where news media are reasonably tightly controlled?

Poke enough, and, sooner or later there will be an “incident” be it an accident or deliberate.

Or, in a country where information and "truth" are strictly controlled and any talk contrary to the official line likely means prison, it might get rephrased into an unprovoked attack over Russian territory ...
