He was head of a pro-Russian party. It's likely that any pro-EU noises were simply to get himself elected, and alignment with Russia was always the plan. The Ukrainian parliament might have gone along with it until the riots known as the Maidan Revolution.

Ah, so he was a liar and a fraud which led to a revolution.
Sounds like the Ukranians took a wee while to catch on but decided in their best interests. Maybe the Russians will follow suit soon.

Trying to understand the reasons behind something is not the same as legitimising it.
Reconstruction money was poured into Germany after WW2 was because the Allies realised that the harsh reparations imposed after WW1 contributed to Hitler's rise. That doesn't mean they thought Hitler had a point.
