He said post game that the gaps were too big and Argentina were over running us, but that's a bit misleading as that occurred after he subbed on Konsa for Gordon and essentially went back 5 and gave them the game. He didn't resort to that because Argentina were pressing, they pressed as a result.

The thing is that the Gordon sub and going defensive switched their mentality and suddenly Argentina felt they were in a game. Had he just done a like for like swap i.e. Rashford, and perhaps even bought on another attacker I think Argentina would have sunk a bit confidence wise, as I don't believe they felt they could take England on in an open attacking game.

All immaterial now though!

Totally agree.

Ach, it'll get analysed to death over the next few days which will quickly become tedious, because it's pretty simple really: Tuchel f*cked that for youse and as a player I'd be questioning his decisions. A lot.

Fair enough I suppose.

But third place is there for the taking, which would be your highest placing since '66 if you manage it, so you've still skin in the tournament.

3rd place is for losers. I couldn't care whether England win the game or lose 10-0

I have no interest in a meaningless game and will not be watching it. I never bothered in 1990 either.

Now that? That is petty.

The opportunity for your best finish in a World Cup for 60 years but it's for "losers"?

Some of the third place matches are the best I've seen, because the teams are often in "Ah, f*ck it" mode.

It's also a fun quirk of the World Cup, or I think so at least.

nothing petty about it

Its a cup competition if you don't win it you are losers

See answer above - the 3rd place match is meaningless. It is for losers by definition. To get into the game you have to be a loser ie to have lost in the semi final

Doesn't change the fact it is a game for losers and I have no interest in the game

Each to their own - I would rather use my time on something that matters like servicing my bike or cleaning the inside of my oven.

Yes, they can be fun. I'll watch if I'm not busy ...

But that doesn't prove they mean anything! I'm sure you're genuine in being passionate about 3rd place (like any good Scottish footy fan), but I'm with Spen on this one - I don't give a monkey's!

And yet you don’t watch them outside of knock out cup competitions, since friendlies, warm up matches etc are, according to you, meaningless.
Odd team fan behaviour imo.

Actually I can *kind* of see it. I'm not a football fan, preferring F1. I'm not that bothered about following practice sessions, and I don't mind if I miss a sprint race. I don't even watch every race, but I do like to watch the key races and the final races to determine the championships.

i have not said that. I watch my teams in league competitions as well as cup competitions

I do not watch friendlies or warm up games as they are indeed meaningless generally.
