I'd take that as a badge of honour.

I think a few of the residents like their regular routines and are rather protective of their own threads.

I think the peremptory time-outs are OTT, especially as there's no warning or chance to question a temporary ban, or to remove the post if you realise it's naughty in retrospect.

When I've moderated stuff, my first course of action is to message the person and ask them to remove an offending post themselves... you can tell a lot about the mindset of the person from how they respond to that request.

This is the first sensible thing you've written here about moderation!

Yeahbut, since the online social media rules have been added to, sites have to be so careful about applying the rules (since BT was a moderator in 1932).

FWIW, one of the FB groups I moderate had another lovely person as a mod, but they insisted that every single post strictly adhered to the rules of the game, and it was tiring, and if not pointless, it rather took the fun out of it when every post had to be policed strictly. It's a little more laissez faire these days, thankfully, and the sky hasn't fallen in, though we still do try to brush up most of the mess at the end of the week.

On another FB I moderated for a while (about 20k 'members'), it was clear that the owner liked furious circular debate about contentious local issues (I'm guessing they were monetising the interaction stats), and it showed the worst side of FB/social media, so the owner won that one: I handed my pass key and lanyard back and left the building.

I'm admin for 3 or 4 (I forget as I'm not that active in the smaller ones). The AUK/long-distance one seems to be a happy group. It's now private (gives me a bit more freedom from FB intrusiveness), every post is (loosely) moderated and new members have to be approved. 18k members last time I looked.
