I asked Copilot simply to straighten out a stitched panorama shot over on the mothership, and it went well beyond its brief. See if you can spot where it's been hallucinating... the more I look, the more I see!

Given how much energy, water, etc. AI uses and ho much climate damage it is doing why are you doing something using AI that can be done locally on your computer or phone using a basic photo package? No uploading, no data centres with all that energy use, cooling (using energy) all still generating all those climate gasses.

If we are going to stand any chance of not destroying ourselves do we need to look at our own behaviour and how we do things?

Because I'm interested in what it can do and why it gets stuff so wrong and so confidently.

I agree, there are all sorts of reasons not to use it, from the economic (it looks like a bubble that will crash), to the environmental, and including the massively detrimental impact it will have on people's ability to read, comprehend and analyse information (including the cognitive development impact).

One might make a comment about the general use of internet/cloud-based stuff, and that perhaps we shouldn't be conversing on an internet forum given the energy use that that entails.

Well, apart from the chimneys, walls, front door, windows and steps, they could be identical twins

It's amusing that a five-year old would probably be able to spot a lot of the differences, yet here's Copilot turning in its faulty homework confidently. I'm not sure why it should be hallucinating (or being creative) when it was a simple prompt to straighten it up.

You could always try the same experiment in Grok. You might get the Reichstag as the second picture.

You are frequently here on the net, so the criticism is not entirely valid.

Typically a Google search does not always take you directly to the information you require first hit, and then you keep the page open while you skim and search for what you need.

While AI uses a similar amount of energy to 10 Google searches, it finds what you need and presents just that. Learning to ask AI very concisely what you require reduces the energy consumption. Asking loose or vague questions increases the energy requirement. Having the answer in nono-seconds rather than minutes means you can then simply close your laptop once you have the answer.

Microsoft claim to have invested heavily in cooling technology such that the water requirement is not as before.

On the other hand using free AI for image work usually produces images that are disappointingly poor quality. Often it just finds another similar image to replace the image you posted as a quick work around.

Are you confusing AI searching with generative AI?

In terms of presence on the net, my comment was in relation to getting AI to carry out tasks that can readily be done without even the internet - there are very energy/resource efficient mechanisms to achieve the same. Posting a comment to a forum is very different in terms of resource use compared to generative AI.

nb what is going on here. I picked up some tragic news some time back but said poster seems to have returned which raises questions as to what exactly is happening here.

My understanding is that a niece of the poster has taken over the account.

That depends doesn't it? Which consumes more energy - a procedure that uses generative AI for 30 seconds, or most of the day on ncap responding to trolls? To be clear I'm not calling you a troll.

Is taking over other people's accounts allowed? Register for own account. It's free. Why not, 'cos pretending to be somebody you are not seems to me a bit deceptive.

a. I far from spend most of the day on ncap.

b. it's about readily available alternatives without even using 10 times the energy for a search let alone generative AI. Big difference between using AI search and generative.

c. it's not an either or type comparison

d. use of internet resources can be offset eg for my personal website I use a hosting company that offsets energy use by a factor of 3 through wind power credits. Offsetting might not be perfect but it's a lot better than doing nothing or just needlessly using ""10 the energy" ...

No deception. I've been open and honest. I am the niece of the original account holder. The names of the accounts are mere avatars, therefore there can be no deception. I'm not pretending to be the same person as the account originator. The site owner would see that I have been posting from the same IP address. They can close the account if they so wish. I'm currently on extended leave due to the circumstances. I return to work in France later this month.

To be clear, I don't disagree that we need to use energy responsibly. I just think trolls use energy wastefully and replying to trolls is not only a waste of electrical energy.

It was intended to do just that, present what you need in the first page, however commercial inteest, things getting busier on the internet, fake news, fake narratives, etc. have lead to the fact we have to skim for results.

Not true if i ask Deepseek any question critical off the chinese goverment, it anwsers and then quickly deletes it's answer just to show how censorship works. ''We have to info but not for you mortal''
But yes AI can ben quicker, it can also be very wrong, and anything in between so no i don't support your claim that's it's more efficient than 10 google searches.

It's called advancement in technologies. Still doesn't make an data centre Water friendly tough
