The article speaks for itself (hence anything I said would be obvious and not phrased as clearly)

Why police have been told to pause their use of AI in court cases

Police forces in England and Wales have been told to pause some uses of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in criminal justice work, including preparing court statements. The intervention follows concerns that commercial AI systems are being used in situations where accuracy, provenance and accountability are critical.
...
The concern is not simply that AI can make mistakes. Generative AI can produce statements that sound plausible but are false. It’s a problem that becomes much more serious when those statements can influence an investigation or form part of a case presented in court.
Although one wonders who in the Police forces ever thought that AI was not "making mistakes that sound plausible" (hallucinating) and why they thought that was not a significant problem when prosecuting somebody.

Weird comparison/units but certainly highlights the environmental impacts of these Datacentres (in the UK)

They're monstrous things data centres. With the advance of wireless everything I think folk forget that the power and information has to come from somewhere, it's not just "there", or as a former colleague put it "I dunno, space or something?".

I just hope that the public is fully aware of the scandal before the point of no return.
Many eg Rory Stewart argue that we need these as we cannot afford to slip behind other countries or our economy will suffer badly. I think what they are missing or overlooking is that when our planet is no longer habitable for humans our economy might just suffer as well.

Our economy won't benefit either way. Tech bros will benefit while our workers are replaced and end up on benefits. What then?

Another issue that I heard recently. The tech bros are not funding AI, they are leveraging it using debt. Surely I am not remembering this correctly but IIRC it is something like their leveraged debt is equal to the world's combined debt. Incorrect or not, it is a massive number.

Listening to a BBC podcast the other day and apparently the recent increase in rates Government borrows at is in part due to the vast sums being sought for the AI/Datacentre funding being sought. There is only a limited amount of money available to be lent and Governments are now in competition with Tech Bros which means Gov. has to pay more to attract the loans.

From World Economic Forum
Furthermore, bond markets are being pressured by a surge of heavy borrowing by companies, including businesses seeking capital for artificial intelligence-related projects. In the United States, businesses have issued almost $1.7 trillionin corporate bonds this year so far, an increase of 27% from the year prior.

So we are already paying the consequences through higher Government borrowing rates meaning less Government money available for things we actually need.

That'll have been the same podcast. 👍

Rory Stewart is a f*ckwit. He thought Kamala Harris was going to beat Trump for a start.

Remembering how crucial it (apparently) is that the UK rapidly adopt these unregulated technologies with proven power to cause significant damage

Sharp rise in incidents of AI escaping users’ control, research finds

Incidents of AIs escaping users’ control to lie, ignore instructions and pursue goals in harmful ways have hit a new high, according to research that also suggests the severity of deception and misalignment is worsening.

Analysis of real-world loss of control incidents involving AI models flagged by businesses and individuals almost doubled in July compared with June, with more than 300 cases in the month, according to the Loss of Control Observatory ...

The observatory was set up with funding from the UK government’s AI Security Institute (AISI) and began tracking AIs slipping free from their users’ instructions last November.

As someone else pointed out, they aren't "escaping users' control", they are doing exactly what they've been programmed to do.
