As someone else pointed out, they aren't "escaping users' control", they are doing exactly what they've been programmed to do.

More than half a century ago , when I was studying computer science, I was taught to think of a computer as TOM, or Totally Obedient Moron. It's stood me in good stead ever since.

And I think still true today, including modern AI and including those who regard it as some sort of pinnacle society can't manage without (even if having it means destroying the one planet we have to live on).

You must have been knitting your own 'punch cards' back then... or were they still clay tablets?

It does make me wonder if the change from 'programming' to 'coding' is a linguistic cop-out for taking responsibility for what programmers do... 'code' feels much more like some sort of magic incantation where anything could happen ("Not my fault, guv!!"), where as 'programming' puts the responsibility on the programmer to get it right, otherwise the program [sic] will refuse to carry on until the programmer has debugged the sic program.

Anthropic sued over alleged theft of ‘tens of thousands’ of songs​

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell, music publishers who manage the copyright of songs on behalf of songwriters and composers, are seeking damages for alleged misuse of “tens of thousands” of copyrighted works by Anthropic.

The plaintiffs claim they are victims of “one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history”.

The lawsuit, filed in a California court, targets Anthropic and its chief executive, Dario Amodei, as well as co-founder Benjamin Mann. It alleges the defendants breached copyright law by “torrenting, scraping and downloading” lyrics from copyrighted works to train its family of Claude AI models – as well as reproducing those lyrics in responses to users’ prompts.

Excellent. On balance, I'd be happy if they brought the whole dishonest edifice down and forced them to start again. As with Meta perv glasses and privacy/data protection, the model is based on totally ignoring established laws and expecting to get away with it

Towards the end of BBC 10 o'clock news last night, a presenter was announcing footy transfers. The background was a largely blue stadium, with two goals at each end. I wasn't paying much attention, but I'm sure I didn't just imagine this. Can anyone else confirm?
