As someone else pointed out, they aren't "escaping users' control", they are doing exactly what they've been programmed to do.

More than half a century ago , when I was studying computer science, I was taught to think of a computer as TOM, or Totally Obedient Moron. It's stood me in good stead ever since.

And I think still true today, including modern AI and including those who regard it as some sort of pinnacle society can't manage without (even if having it means destroying the one planet we have to live on).

You must have been knitting your own 'punch cards' back then... or were they still clay tablets?

It does make me wonder if the change from 'programming' to 'coding' is a linguistic cop-out for taking responsibility for what programmers do... 'code' feels much more like some sort of magic incantation where anything could happen ("Not my fault, guv!!"), where as 'programming' puts the responsibility on the programmer to get it right, otherwise the program [sic] will refuse to carry on until the programmer has debugged the sic program.
