There is no substitute for human intelligence. AI be damned.

I hope that I go to my grave (quite a little while from now, if not very far geographically) still with the conviction that the human brain is one of the most miraculous things in the universe, even with all its quirks. And human language runs it a close second.

We are all fat heads. Our brains are just fat, water and some other random stuff. Human intelligence is nothing when we are the designers and constructors of all the stuff (including the internet and AI) that is soon to destroy us. Look at how much we collectively care.

What do we matter? Not a lot on a universal scale, but the wonder of consciousness is a precious notion nevertheless, and our planet is/was so beautiful!

I am not a religious person, but appreciate that the associated myths resonate with meaning, sometimes prophetic, or at least insightful beyond limited material rationales.

We, and our parents and dear ones, shape and grow our own minds, or not, as we choose. The tree of knowledge analogy kind of reflects this. Having apparently developed as a species in conscious choice and ethical responsibility I am appalled by 'human' effort (or its lack) to stupify future generations.

I insist on caring as an individual and fighting for my child and grandchild to have a chance of life and freedom and mindful love. If no-one else cares to participate in this project I'm still up for it!

What else can I do?

UK datacentres will create just 25% of jobs predicted by tech sector, analysis finds

Datacentres in the UK will create just a quarter of the jobs predicted by the tech sector, while consuming vast amounts of energy, according to new research.

Environmental thinktank Verdant predicts that all the datacentres currently planned are likely to directly employ 10,400 workers – compared with the more than 40,000 cited in projections by the industry lobby group TechUK.

Labour has defended the rapid rollout of AI datacentres in the face of growing public scepticism, amid concerns about their demand for water and energy. The government has also echoed TechUK’s claims about job creation.
Tech sector lying about developments they want to make. Government just repeating those lies. Are we surprised?

No.
In other news, Anthropic are warning of a greater than 10% chance of AI wiping out the human race within 10 years. Great this, isn’t it?

I've been imaginating on this... dunno if my take is similar to Anthropic's but here goes -

Financial exchance security depends on prime factorisation. AI can do that. Therefore we need to free ourselves from the global markets urgently.

On the radio the other day CEO of ARM Holdings was talking about AI and claiming how it will find the cure to cancer. Bit of an "old story", promising "the cure to cancer" (again). Also lack of understanding what he's talking about as there are loads of different cancers from many causes requiring different "cures" so dearming of a single "cure" is just naive.

Plus, thinking back to when I was younger "C" (or any sort" was considered a death sentence yet in a relatively short time medical research (without AI) has done pretty well finding lots of cures and treatments for lots of cancers.

So ARM CEO promising "cure to Cancer" and I expect next talk he gives he'll be promising AI will find the end of war, following talk how AI will end world hunger, fix Climate Change, end poverty (for those with multi-billion $ bank balances, etc. Promise anything to get your way and keep the prolls happy with nudification apps.

Although as AI is something we have developed, something we control and a tool we have made, a bit like we are destroying ourselves. Just like if we dropped a nuclear bomb on ourselves - would be blame the bomb or blame the person who pushed "the button".

But then if AI doesn't wipe us out, we'll manage the same self-destruction with Climate Change (and all despite knowing exactly how to avoid it and despite having everything necessary to avoid it). Almost a definition of stupidity. We are a flawed species.

There is an assumption there that we control AI.
Even Anthropic think that is no longer the case. Once the genie is out of the bottle…

I agree but also there is an assumption that we can control Climate Change. Or that we can control our economy, etc. All things we have created that we assume we can control but maybe reality is we can't or we won't address it until we can't. eg for Climate Change scientists have identified "tipping points" after which positive feedback will have "taken the genie out of the bottle".

I can confirm that by “we” you don’t include me.
My longstanding position is that people who think they have control of their lives are delusional.
This includes climate change and the global economy from individuals right up to governments. A concerted effort would be required and that seems beyond humans.

Doesn't include me either.

But the problem comes in that in our "democratic" system we (the electorate) make collective decisions so to some degree bear collective responsibility even if we strongly disagree and argue against.
