FFS - outsourcing programming a child's emotional development and language skills to 'AI toys' 😢
It's the natural progression from outsourcing development and language to an iPad.

We went to the Ivy in Guildford for my in-laws 50th Wedding Anniversary. We were in the looking glass room and there was one other family. Two women and a girl of about 8 or 9. She had an iPad on her place setting. On full volume. The women barely spoke to her. The maitre'd would also not intervene - he just said there is nothing we can do. I suggested just taking the ipad and grilling it. He wasn't amused.

I'm not sure what annoyed me more. The fact that her mother was allowing her to doom scroll tiktok at full volume, or the fact that in a high end restaurant where a meal for 9 people is >£400 that they did sod all.

I was told that I was not allowed to ask them to switch off the volume, something I would have had no problem doing.

You don't have to work out the correct answer yourself – just say how many times you think AI got the task right."
My total score was 6.1 vs the actual number of 6.0, but some of my predictions were quite varied from the actual results.

I think if I were paying that much, I would say I was going to leave very negative public feedback and expect a hefty reduction if they were not prepared to do anything to make the dining experience pleasant. I don't think there's any excuse for that. If needs be, they need to have in their T&C's that devices must be on silent and that they reserve the right to eject customers who don't comply.

I don't disagree, having ceased to frequent more than one establishment for similar reasons (said establishments were somewhat less expensive than icowden's venue)

Is there ANY situation where you would consider another diner (or their offspring), behaving in a way which reduced YOUR dining experience, acceptable?

That would depend on how much it reduced the experience.

I have a quite high threshold for things that would be unacceptable, slightly higher than the threshold for things that are slightly annoying.

Also, if I appeared to be the only customer who found it so unacceptable.

You can do what you like.
They can’t stop you from speaking to other customers.
Just a quick 10 second chat would have been fine.

This isn't a fail I suppose, more of a vague rant.

There's nothing wrong particularly with this, but it angers me mostly because nobody who fired that into Chat CPT could explain the rationale.

AI is literally killing creativity.

Re the nice bar chart about roundabouts I posted in the Trump thread, my initial prompt was "Could you draw a bar chart of..." and it said "No, but here's a list of the data". I then asked if it could convert the data into a bar chart, which it promptly did. Bizarre.

Have to agree with this. It would be like saying that a chisel has failed someone when they haven't managed to turn out a Chippendale chair despite them having a GCSE in Design Technology. Searching for information is a skill that needs to be learnt, equally as much if you are using IT to do the searching.
