Whatever the circumstances, that loss of life lies with the government.

Difficult to comment with such little information, but suicide would seem to suggest some government culpability.

Why, people top themselves all the time, for various reasons.

It's not always the case someone else is to blame.

They might like to reconsider that. I can see there being a lot of people looking for lodging at His Majesty's pleasure in the near future.

If the prisons are full maybe they'll be put in Holiday Inns.

They've broken the law by arriving here without permission. People on remand aren't convicted of anything btw.

Regardless, why is it inhumane for one detained cohort but not another? Do convicted prisoners not deserve humane conditions?

What law did they break by arriving without permission? IMHO it's a grey area as, if they surrender themselves to Border Force as soon as they arrive, then they're 'legit'. They're not on remand and should be free to come and go from BS at will; the fact they can only do so on a bus is part of their complaint.

They also say that the regime on board, the nature of the rooms and behaviour of security guards make it feel too much like a prison. Not good if you've escaped from a regime that uses prison and ill treatment to control dissent.

Prisoners, whether on remand or serving a sentence are legitimately detained and guarded by Prison Officers; different kettle of fish.

It's a criminal offence in UK law, as it is in most countries, to arrive without permission. People on remand haven't been found guilty of anything either. The BS is either a suitable detention centre or it isn't. That doesn't change based on whether you like or dislike the occupants.
