A rather depressing read from a parent of four children about how prevalent covid is in schools, and how little (i.e., nothing) is being done about it.

We are (rightly) very critical of US Gov. attitude to vaccination but strangely their official guidance on who should be given Covid booster vaccinations covers a larger segment of the population (groups) than UK Government's policy.

Whilst prognosis from the acute disease might have improved from the early pandemic days I understood long covid is still very devastating.

I think his points about ventilation and staying at home if you're ill, to reduce spread, are more critical than vaccination, as that applies to most illnesses, not just covid.

Certainly seem to be a lot of 'colds' around in the school population at the mo (and I'd not be surprised if a lot of them are covid).

A guy where I work came in with it, having tested positive and told he had to. It now just seems to be accepted. Which is weird and frustrating.

It's a sad & bizarre state of affairs when people are being told to ignore a basic instinct not to want to give other people the bug they're suffering from.

Didn't we learn that it is not that easy to stop it, and there are downsides to people staying at home for two weeks? Your article just feels like a moaning parent to me, and for what it's worth at my kids' school attendance has recovered to pre-covid levels. There is a similar discussion around vomiting and diarrhoea and the 48 hour sentence they receive as a result.

Good to hear your perspective too. But I don't think this is all an either/or thing: two weeks is too much, but telling people to go to work/school when they are at the worst stage of spreading isn't helpful for finding balance, and the 'forgetfulness' about ventilation is bizarre, assuming we don't actually wont to proactively spread disease.

(FWIW, it's an overly-long piece, poorly structured, IMHO.)

Covid continues to decline in deaths and serious complications. Its just another one of those illnesses now-thankfully

I think the reality is that they will all get it whether the window is open or not. It is too infectious now and still, I imagine, spreads before symptoms appear.

The only bit I have sympathy for is shaming kids into going to school when they are too sick and should be at home.

It's a similar problem to flu, but appears to have more long term possible side effects. If you have had the jab or are not particularly susceptible (like children) then it is thought that it won't affect you much. The form of Covid 19 is now much more benign than it was - hence we aren't having lockdowns or wearing masks.

There is a reasonable argument that we should learn from the Japanese - i.e. if you have a bad cold or cough, then a face mask will help stop other people from getting infected by your particulates. They don't really work to protect *you* they work by protecting other people.

One of the more worrying (and expensive) upticks is that there has been a significant increase in the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes following the Covid 19 outbreak. It's not yet known if there is a direct connection, but Type 1 often occurs where the immune system has compromised the pancreas' ability to produce insulin (Type 2 is where the pancreas is worn out due to poor lifestyle choices).

On a different note, the UK has finally decided that letting children get chickenpox to boost the immunity of adults to shingles, is ridiculous policy. In one of my kid's classes last year, nearly half the children were off with chickenpox at one time. Some of them were off for two weeks. All that suffering, loss of education and parental leave for an entirely preventable disease.
