I see that Zuckerberg's Threads has toppled Musk's X for daily active users. It gives me slight pleasure that X is on the decline, given Musk's malign influence, but it's only slight as I don't think that Zuckerberg gives two hoots about the corrosive effect he's having on the world. (FTR, I do get a very small income from Meta, just enough to justify making a tax loss on it.)

I tried Threads for a while, but didn't find it of any interest/use at all for keeping up with the news and informed opinion.

Can you arrange for the whole world to switch over to Signal and ditch Whatsapp?

Signal seems very reliable and for me has proven very useful (eg last few days I've had no phone service thanks to EE but Signal rock solid). I think I make more use of Signal than other voice/text systems (I don't use WhatsApp, not registered/no account on any of those systems).

Neither of us are representative of the masses though.

Who owns signal?
Signal Technology Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is "to support, accelerate, and broaden Signal's mission of making private communication accessible and ubiquitous"

The Signal Technology Foundation, commonly known as the Signal Foundation is an American non-profit organisation ... Its mission is to "protect free expression and enable secure global communication through privacy technology." Its subsidiary, Signal Messenger LLC, is responsible for the development of the Signal messaging app and the Signal Protocol (from Wikipedia).

Even with my massive social media reach, I think that laudable aim would be somewhat ambitious for me. I avoided Whatsapp for ages for the same reason I don't use the Facebook app, but it became increasingly inconvenient not to, which is how all these monopolistic apps trap you.

Out of interest, how is Signal funded? Obviously Meta is selling your data for targeted advertising for FB & WA, but Signal...?

Donations and grants. Whatsapp makes money through its business customers although I don't know if it makes a profit overall.

Thanks - I wonder if that's sustainable if it enlarges (the same question hangs over Bluesky). I think there's a likelihood that the funding models for FB & WA are going to change, as Zuckerberg isn't as rich as Musk yet. Allowing targeted advertising or paying a subscription have been mooted, I think.

Woman fined £150 for pouring coffee dregs down the drain?
this is crazy. My understanding is that most rainwater drains end up in the sewer anyway?
what is a responsible way to pour away cold coffee?

No, rainwater drains should go to a seperate surface water sewer system (although there'll be a lot of historic combined systems). Highly pedantic though or there's more to it than the headline.

The cynic in me wonders how long that audible mission would last if it became as ubiquitous as WhatsApp. A bit like a drug dealer giving out freebies until people are hooked.

If she had the time or energy she could probably challenge the fine on the basis of "pollute".

All ends-up in the same place - our rivers and waterways. Which is why all those waterways previously known as "River <something>" are now just open sewers so our water companies can use them for free and create loads of £££ for their shareholders.
