Yeah, that was what surprised me... I hadn't looked for a week or two, so the drop surprised me, with no apparent extra alarm bells ringing specifically for the UK. Maybe the markets are just spooked a bit by Starmer's fence-sitting and trying desperately not to sound EU-friendly economically.

I heard a couple of days ago from the beeb that the euro would likely strengthen against the pound, so it's not unexpected and nothing to do with our stance.

I don't know what it actually is to do with, mind you, but the chap on R4 sounded jolly clever.

UK borrowing costs have risen sharply too, mirroring the US's. Amusingly Greece is doing well on that front.

Europe (EU) GDP: $28.22 trillion.
USA GDP: $29.72 trillion.
UK GDP: $2.85 trillion.

So Europe isn't so little and if you were to add the UK's GDP, Europe including UK exceeds US GDP.

So what you've been trying to tell me in a long winded way is that the EU plus the UK is bigger than the US in GDP terms.

And?

Your original point was about a trade deal between the UK and the US.
Many obstacles. A lot the potential concessions are not good.

I mean, Sunak's 'deal' was pi$$ poor wasn't it? Just lip service on the face of it:

In June 2023, Biden and Sunak announced the 'Atlantic Declaration' to strengthen economic ties between the UK and the US. The agreement included a limited trade pact covering critical minerals needed for EV batteries, a new data protection deal, and easing other trade barriers.

I’m finding the bin situation in Birmingham a bit odd. The BBC were reporting earlier that ‘some bins’ haven’t been collected for up to 5 weeks. However, I was seeing reports going on about rats and showing huge piles of rubbish in the streets at least 2-3 weeks ago. Around here we have our fairly small (120 litre) bins collected every 3 weeks so those piles were initially being shown around the time we’d have to wait for a standard collection. I can probably easily get 6 weeks of food waste in the sealed caddy we are given (it gets emptied weekly but usually only has one small bag in it). OK recycling gets collected weekly but as long as it is washed it can usually be stored neatly without smells and collection is by a company separate to the council.

So is waste collection in Birmingham stuck in the 20th century, are the residents there particularly lazy / wasteful or is the reporting less than accurate?

A lot of the stuff I've seen in reports is there needlessly. eg a mattress could be put aside or under a bed till appropriate.

Recycling rates in this region is still below the 40% minimum threshold because basically, people cba.
Everything is there to facilitate recycling. I was told by a discerning citizen 'I willnae separate until the cooncil force me te'.
The local civic amenity site is really good and you can even deposit battery's and old engine oil yet the litter strewn and dumped in the sticks is omnipresent.
It's time resources were put into heavily fining a few 'examples' to dissuade them as good reason is insufficient for idiots.
