Spain doing something right?

They have a lot of sun which helps, but the graph below shows they have a lot of other stuff too.

Give every household £100, and some more, to subsidise energy bills
Every time I hear this "Government is giving us ..." actually it's our money already.

The Government budgets don't have spare cash floating around with nothing to do so long term every £100 they "give away" means increasing their taxation income by the same amount from somewhere else.

Or kicking the can down the road for some future Government to make themselves unpopular when the inevitable is required. See the 2021 energy give away that is now rolled into the debt left for the current Government to deal with having tied their own hands and feet by promising not to increase any of the taxes that are the fastest to bring in revenue.

Re the Belfast riots (or riots in general), I just don't get the thinking.
"Something wrong has happened here. I know the solution, let's make this area worse." Nuts.

As pointed out by a number of politicians.
There are plenty of white people in Belfast who were/are capable of equally horrific crimes.
Why the sudden concern?

They like setting fire to things in Belfast - have done for decades.
Just warming up for marching season.

Not just a Belfast thing though.
My personal opinion is that they are complete idiots incapable of rational thought. Probably not an acceptable opinion though these days.

Perfectly acceptable I reckon. They're fuelled by rhetoric off mindless social media posts (and tabloid nonsense) which spread quickly and without thought.

All that does is provide easy ammunition for the right wing who bring everything back to immigration and how it's causing all the issues in the country.

Smashing up your own back yard is particularly idiotic though. Always has been, always will.

They are being influenced by outside agitators. Punch and Judy are always beating each other up, but you never see the puppet master behind the screen.

Riots always take place in poor areas. It’s not a problem if you have very little to lose in the first place. These people have no voice and the only way they can vent their frustration is via violence as they don’t have the education or vocabulary to do it any other way.

Seeing photos like this made me think of the lyrics of the Oratorio 'A Child of Our Time' by Tippett, specifically "Burn down their houses, beat in their heads". That was for Jews in 1930s Germany. It is shameful that every word of that piece is now relevant again, in the UK.

For the life of me, I cannot see how the Government can justify using X for their communications, when Musk is using openly it to try to overthrow the democratically elected government. Utterly incomprehensible. They stopped Russia Today from broadcasting in the UK, and that was subtle in comparison.

Sky News clearly had a footage from a helicopter around 9.30 pm last night, showing multiple cars on fire - it looked like clearly targeted property and properties.
The thing that struck me was there wasn't a single fire engine seen in any of the shots, yet in places there were clearly just a handful of people on the streets watching.
Indeed, only one shot even showed any police vehicles.
