Give every household £100, and some more, to subsidise energy bills

Every time I hear this "Government is giving us ..." actually it's our money already.

The Government budgets don't have spare cash floating around with nothing to do so long term every £100 they "give away" means increasing their taxation income by the same amount from somewhere else.

To be fair our transition away from fossil fuels has been as good, the difference being Spain no longer peg their electricity price to gas, as far as I know.

Or kicking the can down the road for some future Government to make themselves unpopular when the inevitable is required. See the 2021 energy give away that is now rolled into the debt left for the current Government to deal with having tied their own hands and feet by promising not to increase any of the taxes that are the fastest to bring in revenue.
