Right wing press will try to rationalise this as Jason Arday having bought this on himself. He didn't, he obviously made some daft mistakes but he was targeted for being a black man in a position of authority, it was the same tactic imported from the US (led by Trump and his goons). Even if he assumed that position through false means, he was singled out due to his skin colour and the sheer amount of reporting far outweighed the questionable decisions he made and now he is dead as a result. What a sad story, we should be better than this as a country.

Having said this earlier I must emphasise that there is no evidenceof plagiarism yet, and the university that awarded him his PhD says it was not plagiarised.

No chance that the media will reflect on its role in the tragedy, but just saw this graphic of some of over 200 Telegraph articles on the subject. I wonder why they suddenly became interested in alleged academic plagiarism and dodgy appointments?

I think this has a way to run. They've hounded someone to death, and I think his employer looks to have veered between virtue signaling decisions in the wrong direction at least twice. I am also not sure why his resignation was accepted. Where was the duty of care?

On the radio this morning some Fire Service/Specialist representative interviewed and he was saying how we need to be considering fire risk when we build new homes. I couldn't help but wonder what planet he was talking about given how come winter for the <gawd knows how many years> we'll have experts yet again saying how we shouldn't be building on flood plains ... given we've known that for decades yet continue to build on flood risk land then those buying those properties want public help protecting them from floods and government financial help when they are flooded ...

Timber framing is now quite common in cheap new build housing estates.
It can cause problems with fire spread.

There was quite a bit after the LA wildfires about how to lower the risk - can't remember much about it, but things about not having trees close to the house (building in forests isn't terribly sensible anyway) and the building material were crucial, IIRC.
There are regular reminders here about the legal obligation to keep shrubbery/grass trimmed on one's land to reduce fire spread... no idea if that's a local bylaw, or a national one.

We biked through the forests in the Gironde (that bit of France that burnt down) about a month ago. The forests were man-made plantations. Thousands of resinous pine trees planted as densely as possible. Actions can have unintended consequences.

That's what struck me too when I saw the photos. How that can be planted without adequate firebreaks is beyond me.

A rather relevant comment that Arday was being used as a token by the right wing press for all black academics, but strangely the same has not been the case for Matt Goodwin. Strange that.
