He seems to be suggesting that black athletes are selected on merit but may have an innate physical advantage in sports hence their overrepresentation in athletics. It looks like a throwaway blog musing not an actual thought through article. As DB says he doesn't address other factors that influence sports choice.

It's well know that black athletes generally have a physical advantage in the power events such as 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump. It's unusual to see white athletes like Amy Hunt being right at the top of the 100m tree.
However this works against them (black athletes) in swimming events as their boyancy is lower than a caucasian.
These are things that were identified decades ago.
GB's talent factory worked to place potential athletes in sports that suited them - I think the likes of Laura Kenny were identified through the talent factory.

Thanks - I'm amazed that any "serious journalist" in 2026 would be in any way surprised that certain genetics leading to certain physical attributes are conducive to certain athletic performances

You'd be surprised how many people on here think genetics are unrelated to sports performance. If you want to lose the will to live, check out the gender thread and see how many times I was told certain people have no advantage over certain other people. On second thoughts don't lol.

But what about those poor motorists who live in London who have to drive a fridge through the ULEZ zone or take their kids stuff to Uni twice a year and can't afford a ULEZ compliant car? War on motorists!

I know that you are joking but that is exactly the response I would have expected from the war on motorists lot.
There are people who can do those sort of things for you. That's how I rolled when living in city centres with no car, and no need for one.

It's good news but I think you'd need a more like-for-like comparison, and a non lockdown scenario, to get really accurate results on the improvement. It's common sense that less pollution means better air and better air means better lungs though. I'd be interested if any european cities where people don't use cars much normally also benefitted during lockdown.

There was a good interview on BBC news with the professor, he explore they had accounted for Covid via a control in other cities.

Yeah it was a reference to the sort of objections being forward by some on Cake Stop when the ULEZ was expanded. If you get it on a cycling forum there’s no hope on Facebook groups or X.
