Owning the Libs should not be a priority, agreed. But it is a nice bonus.

Depends on your view on politics if you see that as a bonus I suppose. Same as riling up far-right supporters, it doesn’t really achieve anything.

Farage’s key aim is to be divisive, an agitator to try to stir up support. Not a man to solve problems or take any positive action. As I said, lazy-arsed grifter!

Whatever our views on him, I think you understimate his skills as a politician. The standing of Reform in the polls shows this.

I don’t underestimate his skills in attracting support. I think his skills in achieving solutions (which should be over 50% of the actual job of being a politician but sadly don’t seem to be these days) are virtually non-existent and he’d be a total disaster.

You could have said the same thing about Starmer before the last GE and wouldn't have been too far wrong. Except that he wasn't that great at attracting support, judging by the fact that Labour got less votes at the last GE than Labour under Corbyn at the GE before that.

If a Politician’s skill set had to be at least 50% achieving solutions, we would have precious few, if any, Politicians.

More’s the pity. A politician’s skill in effectively utilising the civil service, leading a team, collaboration, etc should be the most important set of attributes. Admittedly lacking in many. Non-existent in Farage.

Quite. Which might just go some considerable way to explaining why we are where we are.

Not sure bookies do that sort of deal.

The bet was with you, you seemed be disagreeing with my statement that Reform wouldn't be the biggest Party. If you want to chicken out though...?

So a way to 'save Brexit' (one can only assume that The Spectator doesn't think it's a finished process) is by undoing part of it. Riiiight.

No idea what the article says as it is behind a paywall, but the last I read in the Guardian was that the youth mobility scheme was going to be for limited numbers and only for 12 months - much like the scheme the UK offers to a number of other countries and wanted to offer to the EU. At this stage, it is all an unknown though.

Yep, won't hold my breath on any of this. I suspect it'll most be unambitious, but obviously my hope will be that at least there's some sort of shift in the right direction to undo some of the most damaging aspects/obstacles, and thereby restore a degree of trust towards intentions of both sides.

If the local elections go badly for Labour, doubt they will be pushing for anything EU related to increasing the population of the British Isles
