In fact, what's the point of the countryside code ? Do people really need it to know that "Please keep dogs on leads" means keep your dog, yes even yours, on a lead, and if you can't be bothered and the inevitable happens, get your wallet out to make it right.

Some people need things spelling out. Sadly it's the same group of people who wouldn't or couldn't read it. Or wouldn't care if they did.

I remember a hike I did to a 7000 ft peak in Canada (we started off quite high). There were maybe 50 people up there with us that day. Someone ate a banana and discarded the skin. Some other people told them that skin would still be up there 50 years from now so go pick it up. It was duly retrieved.

This would never happen in Britain. Instead you'd get some sort of semi cereal self entitled ignorant repost. So guidelines, common sense and a respect for a place is totally without value in the UK. The Brits have a uniquely awful attitude to nature.

So, it could be a self inflicted (financial) injury?

Yes, despite all the warnings that they would get stiffed. I'm pretty sure that the 90% of fishermen wanting to leave was a robust figure, as they'd swallowed the guff about 'taking back control' of UK waters, without thinking about where the fish was being sold.

It was like Cornwall, who voted strongly in favour of leaving despite having benefited massively from EU funding. The next day the county council was saying that they expected the UK government to make up for the loss of EU funding.

Not disimmilar to the area in which I live. Lots of EU funded things, Nissan exporting cars to Europe, no doubt other examples.

However, maybe I have a particularly stupid circle of friends / acquaintances, but, I cannot think of one example of any of them (who voted leave) saying they feel it was a mistake to do so.

Is that a function of their average age?

It's not easy to admit one's own blunders, especially when the things that people had warned would/might happen then actually happened. Very few of the problems were entirely unforeseen.
