That's how the Spanish right paved the way for the 1936 coup. The US is following the German path to fascism, the UK seems to be following the Spanish path.

At the risk of recourse to national stereotypes, I'm not entirely unoptimistic that the British "Yeah, so what?" apathetic mindset won't succumb in large enough numbers to make these provocations work. Though the media will do their best to amplify local flashpoints into a 'national emergency' narrative.

Actually, it struck me that this would be a more accurate headline:

That "can't happen here" type argument didn't quite work in the US, though, can't see why it would work here any better.

At the risk of sounding complacent, I think the risks in the US have been much higher for a long time, with all sorts of risky ingredients such as the widespread undisguised racism (evidenced in continuing use of the Confederate flag by public bodies) and fundamental Christianity, the inhumanity of the healthcare system etc. One might argue that the sense that the US was healing under Obama was merely a mirage, and none of the systemic potential flashpoints really went away, and in fact having a black president merely inflamed the bigots even further, making them more intent on pushing back on progress.

But it's no reason to be complacent, for sure.

The RW press & Farage are desperate for riots. I mean, really, really desperate.

More than 40% arrested in last year's riots had also been reported for domestic abuse including actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, stalking, breach of restraint and non-molestation orders and controlling coercive behaviour.

Of course, these were just concerned citizens with 'legitimate' grievances. I am simply amazed that mindless thugs attempting to burn asylum seekers from their accommodation also turned out to be a bunch of stalking, coercive domestic abusers. It's almost as if they just enjoy hurting people....

Telegraph really going for it now. I just get this suspicion that what they want to do isn't for the good of the country as a whole. They've found someone with matches, and they are supplying the paraffin.

but but……. Lucy Connolly

I think the Telecrap has been poking the ‘Summer of riots’ theme for a few weeks now forgetting the swift justice dealt last year.

They really want the country to fail because they don’t like the government. Stupid.

I am actually not sure how we got to this point or what the right wing rags really want. I suspect they don't really know either. They seem to have imported a lot of this trash from the US and now just seem to have been swept away in a sea of mindless gibberish with imbeciles like Hannan leading the charge.

Well, I suppose it sells copy (does it?) or gets clicks, and winds up the libs, so what's not to like? Who cares if a few neighbourhoods get burned down and brown people get hurt?

I think this is where my (genuine) confusion sets in. Is it so facile and cynical as being simply about clicks and money or is there a more sinister ideological bent behind it, being pushed by the owners? I really can't decide but if pushed I would lean towards cynical money making and exploitation with an almost psychopathic lack of empathy for the repercussions felt by many subject to their vitriol.

I think you over estimate the intelligence and organisational skill of the owners 😊
