The FT's John Burn-Murdoch's suggestion of what's driving a lot of modern politics.

I was "out' for Christmas lunch with five of my drinking pals, yesterday. Nothing grand, just like a "normal" , Friday, ie excess of alcohol, and excess of hot-air, but, with Christmas Jumpers, and, an even bigger hangover that usual. 😊

Before too much alcohol had been consumed, one of our number was lamenting that his granddaughter, who recently left university with a "first" (not sure what in) has been unable to find a job (other than part time bar work).

As we "old farts" do, he has been trying to be helpful with various suggestions, invariably not well received.

He did a quick poll of the six of us, half of us had obtained our first job effectively through nepotism (ie one of our parents "knew someone", who slotted us in). I wasn't one of the 50% by the way. But, all of those industries (ship building, heavy engineering etc) have long gone now.

Interestingly, few of our number actually understood what our offspring actually did for a living (from memory, "something in IT", a Civil Engineering Health and safety person, a Marine related Health and Safety person, a complete mystery one who works (from home) for some American Company, plus a few simple ones Dentist, Pharmacist, Teacher, Nurse). It would appear that those with jobs which none of us understood what they actually did, appeared to be the "high earners".

Far more in depth process to check original country for any record of criminality. Then make a decision before getting on US soil

How much depth do they go to now?

I thought that criminal convictions always counted against anyone wishing to enter the US.

Well, that's restored my faith in the monarchy, for sure. I was beginning to think that they were an expensive irrelevancy, and that having large publicly-funded institution membership of which is open to one family, might be wearing a bit thin in the 21st century.

Side note: is George a Trump supporter? If not, he needs to think a bit more carefully about his choice of ties.

They check your Internet history as well now

So they already check criminal records.

I hope when checking Internet history criticising or even insulting Trump and his MAGA acolytes does not work against people gaining access to the US. By any standard that would be an incredibly petty and vindictive thing to do...even by the Pussy-grabbing Tangerine Twat's standards...oops that's me banned now.
