The Golders Green stabbing suspect had been referred to Govt's anti extremism programme according to the BBC
The Beeb have been at the wrong end of both approaches, as have the police. Wasn't there a story a few months ago where police were looking for a male suspect of medium height and build blah blah, but failing to mention their enthicity out of a mistaken sense of political correctness? Not sure why they keep saying he was 'Somali born but arrived legally' when they could just say he's a British Citizen. If he was a white, British Citizen born in South Africa that arrived here legally would they bother with that part?

BBC were using 'Somali born British national ' this morning.
I am not an authority on journalistic ethics, but isn't there at least a discussion to be had, where an incident is a terrorist incident, to provide some information in the reporting that might indicate in what way?I assume the intention is to stop people trying to make out that the perpetrator is an illegal immigrant / asylum seeker but to do that all they need to do is say they are a British Citizen as their country of origin is then completely irrelevant. I sort of understand in instances like the Liverpool car attack when they said the driver was a white, British male due to the history with similar attacks although I still think British male would have sufficed especially if they added that it wasn't believed to be a terrorist attack.
My (maybe incorrect) assumption is that when they report "a terrorist incident" they are just repeating the Police classification of their investigation (ie "Police are treating <X> as a terrorist incident"). I assume this means that different groups of more specialist officers are involved.I am not an authority on journalistic ethics, but isn't there at least a discussion to be had, where an incident is a terrorist incident, to provide some information in the reporting that might indicate in what way?
An analogy might be the suspects in the Salisbury poisonings. It would be relevant tlnit that they were white or of some other ethnicity, but that they were Russian nationals.
This is totally different from reporting a man caught speeding on the A320 as a Somali national.
I always find the contrast between terrorist incidents and general run of the mill murders quite stark. e.g. the murder of Finbar Sullivan was on the BBC as a foot note. He got more attention than most (perhaps because he was white and middle class, who knows), but he was stabbed in broad day light in Primrose Hill.
