The same laws of physics and physiology apply, whether it's Ottery or Ottawa. If you reduce speeds, KSI numbers reduce dramatically, not least as drivers have longer response times, and the damage to the human anatomy is hugely less, even more so in the case of children, IIRC.

Not that you knew him, but Manc33 claimed on Cake Stop that the laws of physics work differently in outer space. He also claimed that the Earth was flat. The two claims fall in the same category. Ditto Ottery and Ottawa.

Chill,I was not in favour of KSI events, simply wondering the impact of the change in rules on the figures.

I can't find any figures for the period in question for Ottawa, but they will follow the same pattern of reduction of KSI as the average speed falls (assuming that the speed restrictions are in vaguely logical places), as sure as night follows day.

FFS, I've ended up slightly defending Lucy Connolly on Bluesky. A parody account had shared her now-deleted tweet about Starmer, but had chopped off the last line, so it ended up reading "He's a child rapist and pedophile". Not only is that deeply dishonest, but you'll see my other objection, that I think her ignorance of how to write means her intentions were already being misrepresented.

tl;dr - don't stoop to their level of misrepresentation. It's easy enough to hang them out to dry without it.

Where to check for breaking news that haven't broken yet

https://www.vice.com/en/article/thi...-when-rich-people-are-fleeing-the-apocalypse/

A website that traks the patterns of rich people's flights and looks for out of the ordinary movements. An out of the ordinary pattern may indicate that rich people know something we don't.

Well know we’re really in trouble in the UK when Le Figaro starts regular front page stories about small boats arriving in Calais from the UK.

Tiptop nimbyism in action at Ottery St Mary. Will probably be overturned by central government, as it's just using the same tired excuses for not meeting their obligations. And taxpayers will foot the bill for the legal machinations. @Pross will nod wearily, I suspect.

"Plans for a major housing development on the edge of a Devon town have been thrown out after hundreds of objections. Almost 600 people objected to the plans for 140 homes on the boundary of Ottery St Mary. About 50 members of the public went to the planning meeting at East Devon District Council on Tuesday and expressed concerns ranging from traffic congestion to impact on the sewage system and the loss of agricultural land. A council report said there was a severe housing land supply shortage but councillors rejected the plans despite warnings of a possible appeal against the decision."

Standard. The officers make a recommendation based on actual planning legislation and the Council's own policies, councillors grandstand to the voters by refusing the application, application goes to appeal where the officer is the one that has to defend the Council's case despite having recommended approval, if they lose (around 65% of cases) the houses still get built and both sides are out of pocket (only a very small number result in a successful claim for costs from the applicant). They should make the Councillors be the ones to attend the Appeal to defend their decision and award costs to the applicant in more cases. I would love to do a FOI request to see how much time and cost each Planning Authority has spent on Appeals where they have ignored their own officers' advice.

On a related note, the local campaign group against a proposed solar farm decided to go around yesterday puttng leaflets on every car windscreen in the area including those on private drives. I'm still totally perplexed why they are making such a fuss as there are probably only around 10 houses at most that have a genuine visual impact and the site is just low-grade grazing land. I might contact them to ask why they feel they have the right to leave their litter on people's private property.

I'd much rather that the nimbyists spent their time on looking at minimising impact or pointing out specific pitfalls that could be ameliorated *before* it gets to detailed planning (I've mentioned before one outline proposal near Exeter Chiefs that should only be considered if the development costs include really good walking and cycling access via a new bridge over both the railway and M5, and parking is limited to say 1.5 cars per property).

The nimbys near me in Topsham have lost most battles, and to be fair to the closest proposal, they are kind of recognising reality by trying to raise enough funds to buy a plot with outline planning permission from the developer which now owns the land... it's an admission that it will get built on unless it's bought be the community. The excuses for not building there, despite the outline planning permission, are the usual ones.

The thing is, all those issues have to be satisfactorily addressed as part of a planning application. The supporting documents will include reports covering all of those issues e.g. a flood risk assessment has to demonstrate that the site isn't at risk of flooding and that it won't increase the risk of flooding elsewhere, a transport statement or assessment will consider the impact on existing junctions and any mitigation measures required, non-motorised accessibility, proximity to public transport. Contributions have to be made to increase school or GP capacity based on established assessment criteria. Objectors seem to think the houses just get built with no wider consideration.
