This is what concerns me. They have committed a grievous crime, and been found guilty. They are criminals. On the day that people are advocating lighter sentences for this under 25. Crime is going to skyrocket.

"I should avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily" Um, they did that to themselves when committing a hideous criime. How did a complete farkwit like that become a judge? If they'd done that to one of my daughters and got that 'sentence' I'd be taking the law into my own hands to ensure they were physically incapable of doing it again and would trust any subsequent jury to back me up.

It's the nature of the immigration not just the numbers that concerns people. Imo people are more concerned about those arriving on small boats via the channel than they are about Chinese students. It's a bit disingenuous to suggest that as long as the overall figures are reducing people should disregard the means of arrival.

Absolutley. Throw them into the chokey for 5 years so that when they come out they are violent drug addicts, much stronger and able to go on and rape more women.

Much better than rehabilitating them, teaching them the error of their ways and trying to get them back on the straight and narrow given that they were aged 13 and 14 at the time of the offence.

No jury would back you up for assaulting two teenaged boys. You would be found guilty and go to prison.

Are you seriously saying you can't see the difference between those here on student visas who count in the immigration stats and those crossing the channel on small boats?
If the UK decided to allow immigration of say 800k a year, you would presumably have no problem with all 800k being those who arrive in small boats across the channel?

Any thoughts about the victims who have been through the trauma of an investigation and trial and seen their rapists get off pretty much scot free? They rehabilitate young offenders in prison btw. They aren't sent to Alcatraz.

No jury would back you up for assaulting two teenaged boys. You would be found guilty and go to prison.

I like the idea of rehabilitation, but it needs to be done alongside some sort of punishment.
You can’t just gang rape a girl and not expect that. It send out the wrong message IMO.

I would say you have to address their “legitimate concerns”, that does not necessarily mean acquiescing to those concerns.

Yes. It should be explained to them that their assailants have not got off scot free.

For three years they will be meeting regularly with a youth justice worker, they will have a strict curfew and an electronic tag. They will be working in construction activities, complete courses designed to address their offending behaviour, may be banned from certain activities or areas and that any breach may result in a custodial sentence. In addition they are not allowed anywhere near the victims. For the first 180 days they will be under intense surveillance to ensure that the programme is working.

Personally I think that we should also introduce the concept of restitution whereby the perpetrators have to put in positive community work, whether that's part of any earnings going to rape charities or to the victims, or being taken to give talks to offender groups or schools.

Youth detention centres are generally ineffective and often increase the likelihood of reoffending. Young people are exposed to trauma, violence and criminal networks. It's generally a waste of taxpayers money.

Yeah, that will make them feel a whole lot better about being gang raped and having the humiliation of it being posted on line…
